Clunky Posted January 14, 2005 Report Posted January 14, 2005 Anyone heard of Clarence Profit , a friend said he was a talented player who died young. Played in an advanced swingstyle with stride leanings. I've never heard of him although I did find this... Jazz Info VOL. I, NO.2 SEPTEMBER 19, 1939 TEN CENTS NO PROFIT FOR GOODMAN Clarence Profit, Negro pianist who was expected to play with Benny Goodman, is apparently out. At this writing, it seems certain that Profit will not join the trio. No explanation for the break has been given, though rumors suggest incompatibility as the cause. Quote
brownie Posted January 14, 2005 Report Posted January 14, 2005 There was an LP on the Merritt label 'The Complete Clarence Profit 1939-1940' which gathered his solo and trio sides. A really excellent vinyl. The British label Memoir also issued an anthology of Profit track. Looks like the CD is out of print now. king ubu Posted January 14, 2005 Report Posted January 14, 2005 The vinyl Merritt can be heard here: http://www.engine-studios.com/vpp/Jazz/Pag...erson25_37.html A programme such as GoldWave allows you to record something you're currently listening to on your computer, though I suppose quality of a CDR of such a webstream wouldn't too good. ubu Quote
couw Posted January 14, 2005 Report Posted January 14, 2005 ... though I suppose quality of a CDR of such a webstream wouldn't too good. it's encoded at 32kpbs, indeed nothing fancy, but nevertheless nice to hear. Quote
AllenLowe Posted January 14, 2005 Report Posted January 14, 2005 Profit is essential, an early modernist, influenced Bud Powell - very advanced pianist - Quote
ghost of miles Posted January 14, 2005 Report Posted January 14, 2005 I first heard of him through Allen's book THAT DEVILIN' TUNE and have been searching for that CD ever since. Quote
Brownian Motion Posted January 14, 2005 Report Posted January 14, 2005 I started a thread about Profit on the AAJ Board. Here's a link: http://forums.allaboutjazz.com/showthread....clarence+profit Quote
Clunky Posted January 14, 2005 Author Report Posted January 14, 2005 Profit is essential, an early modernist, influenced Bud Powell - very advanced pianist - I'm excited already, ordered the disc through a seller on amazon.de hope it comes through Quote
JamesJazz Posted January 14, 2005 Report Posted January 14, 2005 I think Profit used the piano-bass-guitar format around the same time as Nat Cole. Any other early groups use this setup? Quote

You're kiddin' me! Quote
AllenLowe Posted January 14, 2005 Report Posted January 14, 2005 Particularly interesting are his chord voicings, which were very advanced - Quote
Clunky Posted February 1, 2005 Author Report Posted February 1, 2005 The British label Memoir also issued an anthology of Profit track. Looks like the CD is out of print now. That one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B...0687470-4807005 received this disc last week , on the first few listens Profit sounds very like Tatum especially on balads , perhaps a bit more adventurous though. Some tracks have a slight latin or caribean feel. The tracks with a washboard band have their moments too.!! Sound quality is adequate and the disc has nicely written liner notes. Glad I got it. A different seller at amazon.de is selling for over 20 euros ( I paid 8) which is quite steep but it's still worth it. Quote
