rostasi Posted January 13, 2005 Report Posted January 13, 2005 I'm hoping that this is legit, but the story is (short): At a restaurant where I meet with friends for lunch, there's a guy who's a regular there on Saturdays. He emailed me this picture. Apparently, a co-worker of his wife has a friend doing missionary work in Indonesia. This picture was taken by her. (Yup, it's a bit down the line...) Anyway, I'm believing it's real. Thought it was pretty incredible, so I'm sharing... here Quote
Spontooneous Posted January 13, 2005 Report Posted January 13, 2005 Here's a guy who says it's a fake. For the sake of that city, I hope he's right. link Quote
Leeway Posted January 13, 2005 Report Posted January 13, 2005 Looks completely FAKE to me. Maybe it's a screen capture from that film that came out a few years ago , about a tidal wave that hits NYC. Quote
GregK Posted January 13, 2005 Report Posted January 13, 2005 why arent any of the cars getting out of the way? Looks fake to me. I hope I'm right Quote
Christiern Posted January 13, 2005 Report Posted January 13, 2005 I think it is obviously a PhotoShop deal. The exaggeration is blatant and there is no indication of anyone running for cover. Besides, it is so spectacular that it would surely have found its way to the media. My verdict: Hoax Quote
Brownian Motion Posted January 13, 2005 Report Posted January 13, 2005 I believe this is a composite photo. Quote
Leeway Posted January 13, 2005 Report Posted January 13, 2005 I used to live in Chicago, For a second, it looked like a typical bad day on Lake Shore Drive Quote
Brad Posted January 13, 2005 Report Posted January 13, 2005 The bottom one (which is what we're talking about) looks fake but the others are scary enough. Quote
rostasi Posted January 13, 2005 Author Report Posted January 13, 2005 Again, I'm so embarrassed by this. I usually check snopes but it's always been for text things - never pictures and I'm usually pretty cynical about these types of things. I don't know which I'm more: embarrassed or angry! So, please accept my sincerest apologies. best to all, Rod --- Now playing: Byron Allen Trio - Time Is Past Quote
Alexander Posted January 13, 2005 Report Posted January 13, 2005 I always wonder what goes through the heads of people who create hoaxes like this. It's bad enough when disasters like the Tsnami or 9/11 happen, and there are plenty of real horrors vying for our attention. But then some schmuck who's starved for attention decides to play on people's sympathy and the end result is that everyone is a little more jaded, and little less trusting... Pathetic. Quote

I don't know if this isn't just a human response that combines modern technology and recent disasters. Look at the hoax photograph of the tourist on top of the WTC with the plane right behind him. That one was as ridiculous as this photograph (seriously, with the cars that close to the ocean and everyone's driving in a straight line, la di da, who could possibly believe that was real??) with the guy wearing a down coat on a warm September day. Brownian Motion Posted January 13, 2005 Report Posted January 13, 2005 Here's a few before and after the tsunami photos, taken from a satellite. I believe these are the real thing. http://homepage.mac.com/demark/tsunami/2.html Quote
