sheldonm Posted January 12, 2005 Report Posted January 12, 2005 Anyone heard the new CD on High Note? Released yesterday, I think. --- Now playing: Wadada Leo Smith - Kangaroo's Hollow ...yep, got it a couple weeks ago from Fathead at one of his shows. I gave a few details on it in the "Live Shows" forum since I had just returned from the show. Mark Quote
etherbored Posted January 13, 2005 Report Posted January 13, 2005 if anyone has read this far and still curious - i received this one today and am spinning it right now. fathead plays ray charles? are you kidding me? with steve nelson? incredible. how can you go wrong? tasty tasty stuff , -e- Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted January 13, 2005 Report Posted January 13, 2005 Sorry, I find this disc/title to be ugly commercialism. Fathead could do something better. Quote
Dan Gould Posted January 13, 2005 Report Posted January 13, 2005 Sorry, I find this disc/title to be ugly commercialism. Fathead could do something better. Sorry that its not up to the standards of Nessa Records. Personally, of all the artists who might do Ray Charles tributes in the future, I can't think of anyone I'd rather hear than Fathead. So, Chuck, were you offended by Houston Person's tribute to Etta Jones? Quote
marcello Posted January 13, 2005 Report Posted January 13, 2005 I'm sorry, but I find Steve Nelson's vibratoless vibraphone a bore. Quote
etherbored Posted January 13, 2005 Report Posted January 13, 2005 (edited) I'm sorry, but I find Steve Nelson's vibratoless vibraphone a bore. --- marcello - a bore? we'll have to agree to disagree. fuller nelson, featuring kirk lightsey, was one of my favorites of 2004... regards, -e- Edited January 13, 2005 by etherbored Quote
etherbored Posted January 14, 2005 Report Posted January 14, 2005 not to worry - something tells me we agree on more than disagree... -_- , -e- Quote
etherbored Posted January 15, 2005 Report Posted January 15, 2005 btw, it just hit me that to refer to steve nelson as vibratoless means you've heard little solo nelson... FWIW, -e- Quote
marcello Posted January 15, 2005 Report Posted January 15, 2005 You correct, I have heard No solo Nelson, thank God! Sorry. I have heard him live on several occasions, as recent as last November with Mulgrew Miller, but what can I say, he's not my cup of tea! He DOES play fequently with the motors/fans turned down, though, like his work with Dave Holland ( and I found that last double live cd VERY SAD INDEED! ) My favorite, by a wide margin, is JOE LOCKE. We have very strong opinions, here; but I'll make you a deal: I'll go out and buy that Nelson cd if you go and buy any recent Locke. O.K.? Quote
JSngry Posted January 15, 2005 Report Posted January 15, 2005 Sorry, I find this disc/title to be ugly commercialism. Fathead could do something better. I'LL SAY!!!! People need to try harder. Howzabout - The Legendary David "Fathead" Newman Presents GENIUS ON MY MIND - A TRIBUTE TO RAY CHARLES SONGS FROM THE MOTION PICTURE RAY PLAYED BY THE MAN WHO HELPED MAKE THEM FAMOUS!!! Now THAT'S better!!! Quote

O.K.? --- the thing about the internet and newsgroups is that you can never understand the tone of a statement unless it's out and out over the top...which i certainly hope mine wasn't! my opinion about nelson isn't strong at all. it's just that i have 4 recordings in which there's plenty of vibrato. FWIW, i also *completely* agree with you about the recent holland double-disc set... now compare him with locke or milt, his vibrato may as well be vibrato-less. your point isn't lost on me at all. nonetheless, i'd be happy to take you up on your deal. recommend to me a locke recording, outside of that 4 walls project... regards, -e- Quote
marcello Posted January 16, 2005 Report Posted January 16, 2005 We Do have a lot to agree about! My comments here are only intended in the the most gentle way. There is too much to love in this music! Although, I have strong opinions about Locke. Try "Beauty Burning" Joe Locke: BEAUTY BURNING Beauty Burning (Sirocco 1008) Paul Bollenback, guitar · Ray Drummond, bass · Frank Kimbrough, piano · Joe Locke, vibraphone · Jeff "Tain" Watts, drums Litha · Twilight · Pools of Amber · Somewhere Waiting · Quiet as It's Kept · Where Is Love? · I-95 · Rasputainian Dance My WebpageJoe Locke Quote

Chuck Nessa Posted January 16, 2005 Report Posted January 16, 2005 Sorry that its not up to the standards of Nessa Records. Personally, of all the artists who might do Ray Charles tributes in the future, I can't think of anyone I'd rather hear than Fathead. Danny, I agree Fathead is the right guy (or Hank Crawford). I'm saying I find the timing less than tasteless. I'd bet money the label had the idea. If Fathead wants to do a "tribute date" he could wait, plan, write, arrange and present a killer disc for all of us. Why do you insist on making these things personal? Quote
etherbored Posted January 17, 2005 Report Posted January 17, 2005 I'm saying I find the timing less than tasteless. I'd bet money the label had the idea. ---- i agree the timing is questionable, at best. given the liner photograph though, i'm also pretty certain that this project was in production prior to ray's passing. -e- Quote

Dan Gould Posted January 17, 2005 Report Posted January 17, 2005 As far as I'm concerned, if Fathead didn't think it was "too soon" then there ain't nothin' "less than tasteless" about it. Quote
LWayne Posted January 17, 2005 Report Posted January 17, 2005 Guaranteed that this project was conceived before the passing of Ray Charles. I had a chance to speak with "Fathead" after his concert at Spivey Hall in Atlanta last July. He advised that he was leaving that gig to travel up to Woodstock NY to begin recording sessions for the Ray Charles tribute CD (would have been 7/23). Not saying that the label, High Note, might have influenced this choice, but "Fathead" has enough character to select his own projects. LWayne Quote
Joe M Posted January 19, 2005 Report Posted January 19, 2005 I trust David more than those who are accusing him of cashing in. Quote
JSngry Posted January 19, 2005 Report Posted January 19, 2005 Seems to me that Ray was doing a lot of work in the months prior to his passing aimed at "establishing his legacy". Like he knew his time was short, and he proceeded accordingly. A shrewd businessman to the end! Quote
Joe M Posted January 19, 2005 Report Posted January 19, 2005 This was probably planned as a tie in to the film, for any who question the timing. And I have no problem with that at all. David deserves his share of the limelight. Quote
BruceH Posted January 20, 2005 Report Posted January 20, 2005 I'm sorry, but I find Steve Nelson's vibratoless vibraphone a bore. I guess that makes it just a "phone." Quote
