Now that we have The Concert Jazz Band Verve Recordings on Mosaic, how does a Complete Sextet box sound? What exactly would/could be included from the EmArcy and Pacific Jazz recordings? And what other sessions might fit into such a box?

Posted (edited)

according to the Library of Congress:

Gerry with his sextet: l to r :Bob Brookemeyer, Dave Bailey, Bill Crow, Zoot Sims, and Oliver Beener, Gerry Mulligan.

hmmm....

okay, let's try again

Gerry with his sextet: l to r :Bill Crow, Oliver Beener, Zoot Sims, Bob Brookmeyer, Dave Bailey, Gerry Mulligan.

Late, who's the person second from left? The only one I can't put a name to.

I think that's actually Wade Legge. At least it looks like him to me. From left-to-right, it would be:

Bill Crow, Wade Legge, Zoot Sims, Bob Brookmeyer, Dave Bailey, Gerry Mulligan

Of course, I've never heard that configuration for Mulligan's sextet. I just posted the photo for fun. Jon Eardley (and/or Don Ferrara) aren't pictured.

I didn't know there were sextet sides from Pacific Jazz. Could someone post a discography of them too. It would be greatly appreciated.

I'd like to see a box of all the Mercury stuff-- not just the Sextet. There's a lot of it on one of those Jazz 'Round Midnight complilations that I really like. At least I think most of it was originally on Mercury: It's copyright Polygram nowadays. Actually it would probably be copyright Universal Music nowadays but the compilations are from the early 90's.

I would be all for this. Some of the best Zoot on record, IMHO.

And, yes, adding the CALIFORNIA CONCERTS material would be most welcome. Wonder what shape the masters are in, though.

This is what Mosaic wrote back when I suggested them this set (and some others) back in February of last year:

"Thank you. We are looking at the Giuffre Verves,

Brookmeyer Verves and Mulligan Emarcy sextets at this time."

Who knows how far along they are on these sets.

I'm with you on this one Laton.

While we are at it we could also do with the Mulligan Quartets on Verve.

A different kind of Mulligan Sextet on PJ:

Mulligan, Paul Palmieri - guitar, Dick Wetmore* - violin, Calo Scott - cello, Vinnie Burke - bass, Dave Bailey - drums, NYC, December 5, 1957.

Full album recorded, only four tracks issued, and then only on the SONGBOOK CD. Ripe for inclusion, especially if the other cuts can be included.

*Such a name!

Good news; I think these are scheduled for the Mulligan SONGBOOKS Mosaic Select...

Yep, those recordings are supposed to make up the "first" 4-disc Mosaic Select. The original stereo reels were discovered within the last year or so, but I haven't heard anything about that particular Select in some time.

Michael Cuscuna e-mailed me about a year-and-a-half ago with very positive comments about how good the recent Japanese SBJC editions of California Concerts sounded, and that he'd likely use these remasters (done by Ron McMaster, I think) for American reissue. I haven't heard them, but would like to. It seems like they (these Pacific Jazz live recordings) would fit well with the EmArcy studio recordings to form a 4-disc Mosaic box set.

I have all but the first studio session that Mulligan's sextet recorded for EmArcy, and the sounds are indeed fine. Maybe, as in the case with the Andrew Hill Mosaic Select, a steady (and polite) stream of e-mails would push this one through.

Here's the first sextet studio album (which I hope Universal Japan gets around to reissuing):

From this site. Just ignore that Mulligan's also listed as playing the "soprano sex."

Oh yeah!! :excited:

Under the current policies of the companies involved, you will not see a set mixing EMI masters (PJ) and Universal (Mercury). The best outcome would be a Mercury set.

Here's the reply I got this evening:

Yes we are thinking about the Mulligan sextet (Verve and Emaracy). Currently

working on a Select of Mulligan's December 57 PJ sessions (annie Ross,

Reunion, Songbook in stereo! and string date).

Sounds like good news ...

As seen on DustyGroove's Website. two fairly new Lonehill releases that may endanger the Mosaic project (hopefully not).

Gerry Mulligan -- Gerry Mulligan Quartet -- Complete Studio Recordings (Gerry Mulligan Quartet/Spring Is Sprung) . . . CD . . . $11.99

Gerry Mulligan -- Gerry Mulligan Sextet -- Complete Studio Recordings (Butterfly With Hiccups/Night Lights) . . . CD . . . $11.99

I do have the Night Lights on CD (with bonus track!), and it isn't that hard to come by.

okay so now I'm confused...

What's left that won't be on the Songbook Select set... (and that's 3CD's) not 4....?

FYI.... Just ordered the Select.... Coming out in January according to the website... (whch means February...) :D

The Songbook Select is completely different groups, no sextet at all. One Lonehill CD would overlap substantially with a Mulligan Mercury Sextet select, but not (as of yet) with a Mulligan Verve Sextet Select.

I have to say, I'd be much, much more interested in a sextet Select than the Songbook Select. I already have Songbook and Reunion and the other sessions just don't grab me.

I just received a Japanese issue of the Mulligan 'Mainstream' CD. Good price at cduniverse, though currently backordered

This really, really swings--impressive with just bass and drums in the rhythm section. Why did I overlook Mulligan for so long? This is great music. Shout out to Zoot SIms too, wonderful playing on these sessions.
