KeystoneKorner Posted January 12, 2005 Report Posted January 12, 2005 Monterey Jazz Festival Photos - 1979 & 1985 The original slides have been hiding for nearly 20 years and are now just seeing the light of day. Quote

Chuck Nessa Posted January 12, 2005 Report Posted January 12, 2005 Don't just "spam" and run. Like Paul said, stick around and give as well as take. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted January 12, 2005 Report Posted January 12, 2005 (edited) This isn't Free For All on 'bone in these pics, by any chance, is it??? Can't really tell, and I can't remember when Paul started with The Herd (but I thought it was around the late 70's, but maybe not until the early 80's). Link: Woody Herman and The Herd in 1979 Love these pics of Woody Shaw too. Edited January 12, 2005 by Rooster_Ties Quote
Spontooneous Posted January 12, 2005 Report Posted January 12, 2005 Tom: FFA didn't join Woody 'til about 1984, methinks. Quote
marcello Posted January 12, 2005 Report Posted January 12, 2005 Re: Woody Herman pic: Looks like it may be Birch Johnson on trombone. Quote
KeystoneKorner Posted January 12, 2005 Author Report Posted January 12, 2005 According to my jazz festival program (I kept that all these years too), Birch Johnson, Nelson Hinds and Larry Shunk were on trombones that evening. Didn't mean to "spam 'n run" (I think that was directed at me); I wanted to post the gallery link before heading to my Tai Chi class. Quote
Spontooneous Posted January 12, 2005 Report Posted January 12, 2005 (edited) Very thorough, KK! (Thanks for all these.) Edited January 12, 2005 by Spontooneous Quote
Free For All Posted January 12, 2005 Report Posted January 12, 2005 Tom: FFA didn't join Woody 'til about 1984, methinks. Correct. I see Frank Tiberi, and is that possibly Bob Belden in the section as well? Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted January 12, 2005 Report Posted January 12, 2005 (edited) Paul, just curious, did you and Belden overlap much (if any) with your respectve time(s) in The Herd?? Edited January 12, 2005 by Rooster_Ties Quote
marcello Posted January 12, 2005 Report Posted January 12, 2005 KK has the id on the Woody Shaw photos under them but that is NOT Clint Houston on bass but Strafford James. So it is : Carter Jefferson on saxophones Onjae Allan Gumbs on piano Victor Lewis on Drums Stafford James on Bass Woody Shaw on Trumpet I saw this group many times! The same band is on "Stepping Stones", except Clint Houston IS on the record. KK's program must have had this line-up. 1. Stepping Stones 2. In A Capriconeian Way 3. It All Comes Back To You 4. Seventh Avenue 5. Theme For Maxine Woody Shaw(tp,flh) Carter Jefferson(ts,ss) Onaje Allan Gumbs(p) Clint Houston(b) Victor Lewis(ds) Recorded Aug 5-6,1978 Quote
Free For All Posted January 12, 2005 Report Posted January 12, 2005 Paul, just curious, did you and Belden overlap much (if any) with your respectve time(s) in The Herd?? Belden was gone before I joined. I think I also see Dave Lalama (piano), Jim Powell (trumpet, right end) maybe Gary Smulyan on bari? I don't know who that red-haired 2nd tenor is. What's the rest of the personnel KK? (Glad there's not a 3rd K, BTW) Quote
Lazaro Vega Posted January 12, 2005 Report Posted January 12, 2005 Nice. No wonder so many people went to jazz festivals: look at the rosters. Hard pressed to find something like that today. The strength of Herman, Getz, Stitt, Vaughn, Joe Williams and the audiences they bring with them -- what even approaches that kind of drawing power now? Quote
KeystoneKorner Posted January 12, 2005 Author Report Posted January 12, 2005 KK has the id on the Woody Shaw photos under them but that is NOT Clint Houston on bass but Strafford James. Hmmm....Clint Houston is listed as the quintet's bassist in the festival program. Was there a last minute personnel change for this date? Quote
KeystoneKorner Posted January 12, 2005 Author Report Posted January 12, 2005 What's the rest of the personnel KK? Here's the rest: Trumpets - Joe Rodriguez, Time Burke, Kit Reid, Bill Byrne Saxes - Dick Mitchell (you are right with Gary Smulyan) Bass - Dave Larocca Drums - Ed Soph All this talk made me remember that I forgot to slip in a slide of another Woody Herman appearance in 1985. I just updated the site, so you might want to check that picture out too. Quote
JSngry Posted January 12, 2005 Report Posted January 12, 2005 that possibly Bob Belden in the section as well? Definitely is. Quote
Free For All Posted January 12, 2005 Report Posted January 12, 2005 Thanks for the photos- very nice. And welcome to the forum! Quote

Theme For Maxine Woody Shaw(tp,flh) Carter Jefferson(ts,ss) Onaje Allan Gumbs(p) Clint Houston(b) Victor Lewis(ds) Recorded Aug 5-6,1978 Correct that Woody Shaw's band had Stafford James on the Monterey gig, but that's Ronnie Mathews on piano; not Onaje Allan Gumbs. I recorded this set live on KJAZ radio in S.F. when I was a kid. The set list: Stepping Stones Why To Kill A Brick Hey KK--I played in the All Star youth band 81'... no pictures Quote
KeystoneKorner Posted January 13, 2005 Author Report Posted January 13, 2005 Correct that Woody Shaw's band had Stafford James on the Monterey gig, but that's Ronnie Mathews on piano; not Onaje Allan Gumbs. Great info...the corrections have been made. Thanks everyone! Hey KK--I played in the All Star youth band 81'... no pictures I was there in '81 too. I wonder what happened to all the slides and negatives I had. In those days, I carried a camera everywhere I went. Quote
