Aggie87 Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 Lon - I've never heard Morelenbaum, I don't think. What kind of music is that? I'd be willing to risk $4.99 to try her out... Quote
jazzbo Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 (edited) Well, this is contemporary Brazilian music from a singer who is a Bossa Nova and beyond veteran. With her husband Jacques (cellist and arranger and composer) she worked with Jobim in his final decade or so, and has worked with others recreating Jobim's music over the last five years. I really like her voice, and her "presence" . . . . This one seems to be a bit of a departure in that she is using synths and drum machines and scratchin' record apparently as a backdrop/accompaniment at least in part. And I'm not sure if hubby is involved (if her husband IS involved that is a big plus). If you want to wait I promise to give a brief report in a week or so when I have it in hand. jazzbo Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 (edited) This one is also available on yourmusic and I can highly recommend it without reservation: It has one draw back: it is too short. It doesn't go on for days! Edited March 29, 2005 by jazzbo Quote
jazzbo Posted April 8, 2005 Report Posted April 8, 2005 Okay, I've had Berimbaum for about 18 hours now. . . Man I dig this! Definitely a tastefully done fusion of the contemporary with the classic. The result is one of those rare albums that frees itself from the cliches of the genre, even though it uses them, presenting them in a new light. Paula sings beautifully. There are some devestatingly good use of low horns, drum machines, synth sounds, and sampled guitars etc. Some parts sound like Laswell dub-productiong (which is meant as a compliment). Some sound like nothing else quite that I've heard. The sonics and the mix are just great. Fun fun music and I'm going to be enjoying and recommending this for some time! Quote
Man with the Golden Arm Posted April 8, 2005 Report Posted April 8, 2005 sampled just the snips on iTunes and this sounds a whole lot more enjoyable that the Six Degrees Chizzil offerings of late. thanks for the rec. and review. Quote
Chalupa Posted April 8, 2005 Report Posted April 8, 2005 Dang. Just got an email saying they were no longer carrying Bobby Hutcherson's Now. Quote
Aggie87 Posted April 8, 2005 Report Posted April 8, 2005 Hey!! That Hutcherson was in my queue for this month, and was supposed to ship to me on April 6th! I just checked after seeing your post, and my Hutcherson order status shows as "cancelled" I would have ordered it a month or two ago, had I known it was going to disappear so quickly. May have to go through my 40+ queue and see if there are any other BN's or anything that might have a short shelf life at yourmusic. Quote
GA Russell Posted April 9, 2005 Report Posted April 9, 2005 Aggie, did they ship you something else, or are they going to bill you your monthly fee without sending you anything? Quote
Aggie87 Posted April 9, 2005 Report Posted April 9, 2005 GA - They haven't taken the next item on my list (Wilco - A Ghost is Born) and bumped it up from May to April, as far as I can tell. So I guess I'm essentially skipping my automatic shipment for April. Now if I get my credit card statement and see a charge on there, I'm not gonna be real happy about that! Kinda squirrely... Quote
Craig23 Posted April 9, 2005 Report Posted April 9, 2005 I would have ordered it a month or two ago, had I known it was going to disappear so quickly. May have to go through my 40+ queue and see if there are any other BN's or anything that might have a short shelf life at yourmusic. Any idea or guess on what may be the next to be deleted from their inventory? Quote
Aggie87 Posted April 9, 2005 Report Posted April 9, 2005 I'd guess the Hill and the two Rivers Conn's would be next. Heck, any other Conn's they may have too. I don't remember which ones they currently have other than those three. Quote
Parkertown Posted April 9, 2005 Report Posted April 9, 2005 Dang. Just got an email saying they were no longer carrying Bobby Hutcherson's Now. That sucks! I just got one from 'em a week or so ago... Quote
sjarrell Posted April 9, 2005 Report Posted April 9, 2005 Anybody ever timed the delay from release to arrival at BMG/Yourmusic for BN titles? I want my $4.99 RVGs! Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted April 9, 2005 Report Posted April 9, 2005 I had to bump Ellington's "Piano in the Background" up to the top of my queue last month because they were deleting it from their catalog. I still have "Piano in the Foreground" in my queue and I haven't gotten any notices on that. Kevin Quote

Big Al Posted April 10, 2005 Author Report Posted April 10, 2005 Dang. Just got an email saying they were no longer carrying Bobby Hutcherson's Now. They send e-mails? I never got one! I guess you have to have one of those items in your queue before they send an e-mail. Quote

I guess you have to have one of those items in your queue before they send an e-mail. Exactly. If they learn that something in your queue will no longer be available to them on the date you have it scheduled to ship, they apparently give you a heads-up. Quote

sheldonm Posted April 13, 2005 Report Posted April 13, 2005 Dang. Just got an email saying they were no longer carrying Bobby Hutcherson's Now. ...so did I! Quote
.:.impossible Posted April 13, 2005 Report Posted April 13, 2005 I got the same email re: Now and the $5.99 increase. Unfortunately I'm not in any position to stock up right now either! I never was able to make last months purchase! Moving is expensive... The want list gets bigger. Quote
GregK Posted April 13, 2005 Report Posted April 13, 2005 I too am losing the $4.99 deal. Thankfully I stocked up early on, so there isn't much left outside of my queue that I must have. I may get the reconfigured Miles/Coltrane box while it's still $4.99/disc, but that's it Quote
trane_fanatic Posted April 16, 2005 Report Posted April 16, 2005 Are they actual retail CDs shipped out or do they have the BMG stamp where the bar code should be? Quote
jazzbo Posted April 16, 2005 Report Posted April 16, 2005 Most that I have gotten are the same cds from any source. A few have been BMG manufactured cds. I haven't noticed any difference with those. . . . Quote
kulu se mama Posted April 16, 2005 Report Posted April 16, 2005 i did not receive the email saying that the $4.99 deal is over. i wonder if i was missed, or i wonder if it is based on purchase amount. i've been a bad boy at $4.99 a pop. Quote
