Guy Berger Posted December 1, 2006 Report Posted December 1, 2006 I decided to save myself $15 and ordered Coltrane's Live at the Half Note, the Cellar Doors Sessions and the Seven Steps box. Guy Quote
Quincy Posted December 5, 2006 Report Posted December 5, 2006 And I decided to save myself $9 and picked up the Billie Holiday Verve and the Roger Miller box. I'll probably get the deluxe version James Brown Live At The Apollo II before the month is out too and perhaps some other 2 disc sets, but since the shipping is free I might as well wait a bit longer and give myself a chance to listen to the above first. And I'll be sticking with 'em after the increase. It may be an old fashioned concept, but I kinda like getting a disc a month in the mail. Quote
jazzbo Posted December 5, 2006 Report Posted December 5, 2006 Added are two new "Songbook" titles from Legacy of Armstrong and Astaire (seems to draw from RCA and Sony titles), the latest Geri Allen. . . and the Essential Michael Bolton! Okay, forget the Bolton, just kidding, honest! Quote
GA Russell Posted December 5, 2006 Report Posted December 5, 2006 (edited) Just ordered six CDs for Christmas presents. Hope they arrive on time! PS - Make it seven. Edited December 5, 2006 by GA Russell Quote
Ron S Posted December 6, 2006 Report Posted December 6, 2006 Okay, forget the Bolton, just kidding, honest! Of course you are--I get the joke. Why would you possibly buy a Bolton comp when you already own every recording he's ever made? Quote
jazzbo Posted December 6, 2006 Report Posted December 6, 2006 (edited) The Armstrong and Astaire actually looked like good comps; I ordered those and the Geri Allen. Edited December 6, 2006 by jazzbo Quote
Guy Berger Posted December 6, 2006 Report Posted December 6, 2006 FWIW, someone at AAJ posted that they have been having issues with yourmusic's customer service. Guy Quote
Big Wheel Posted December 6, 2006 Report Posted December 6, 2006 I think I may cancel right before the price change and see if they throw anything my way. What's the downside? Quote
Noj Posted December 6, 2006 Report Posted December 6, 2006 My November order shipped on 12/2, and it was changed to Howard Roberts' Good Pickins because Miles Davis ESP was backordered. They also have yet to ship the 5 RVGs I ordered 11/20. I guess they'll ship some time in January. Must be busy over there! Quote
Tom 1960 Posted December 7, 2006 Report Posted December 7, 2006 I placed an order for 5 discs on November 16 and they just arrived this past Saturday, December 2. Alittle slow, yes. But in the end, I paid just over $32. You can't complain too much. Quote
GA Russell Posted December 7, 2006 Report Posted December 7, 2006 (edited) BMG is saying that December 13 is the last day to order in time for the "holiday". I assume that Your Music operates on the same schedule. Of course, once they give it to the post office it is out of their hands; and sending it media mail the p.o. is going to give the CDs a low priority. PS - Christmas is on a Monday this year, so that means that they expect orders placed on Dec. 13 to arrive by Saturday the 23rd, only ten days later. That seems optimistic to me. Aggie87 Posted December 11, 2006 Report Posted December 11, 2006 (edited) Lee Morgan - City Lights Horace Silver - Doin' the Thing Trio Beyond - Saudades Geri Allen - Timeless Portraits and Dreams (w/bonus disc) Miles Davis - Cool and Collected (yet another compilation) R.E.M. - And I Feel Fine (Best of IRS Years 1982-1987) edit - there are a number of BN's on BMG's page, so I'm guess these will also show up at yourmusic shortly. Ron S Posted December 11, 2006 Report Posted December 11, 2006 question: do yourmusic.com purchased titles have any stamps or branding that identify them as a music club issues? -e- Some do and some don't. But even with the ones that do, it's generally only a difference in the bar code (where it also says "Mfd. for BMG Direct . . . under license"). Very subtle. Otherwise pretty much identical to the "regular" issue. Quote
etherbored Posted December 11, 2006 Report Posted December 11, 2006 is yourmusic associated with a label as columbia and bmg? -e- Quote
Aggie87 Posted December 11, 2006 Report Posted December 11, 2006 is yourmusic associated with a label as columbia and bmg? -e- yourmusic is a separate "club" run by the BMG Music Club. Essentially the same inventory. Quote
Ron S Posted December 11, 2006 Report Posted December 11, 2006 is yourmusic associated with a label as columbia and bmg? -e- yourmusic is a separate "club" run by the BMG Music Club. Essentially the same inventory. I think some confusion is caused by the term "club". With both books and records, "clubs" typically sold (still sell?) different editions than those available in stores--e.g., book club editions were typically printed on different/cheaper paper, were not part of the publisher's regular printing run, etc. With virtually all BMG Direct CDs, the CDs themselves are generally identical to the ones sold through regular retail outlets, and the packaging appears to be identical (and in many cases actually IS identical) to that sold through regular retail outlets, except for the different bar code noted above. In fact, BMG specifically avoids the term "club", instead using "BMG Music Service" or "BMG Direct", probably to characterize itself as a distribution service as opposed to a "club". And as one of the largest producers/distributors of CDs in the world, BMG is hardly some inferior alternative, as some might believe. It's just a cheaper alternative. Quote
etherbored Posted December 11, 2006 Report Posted December 11, 2006 good clarification, ron. i didn't mean to come off as i were denegrating clubs. i'm sure many a fledgling jazz listener has taken their collection to the next level (from introductory to cursory) with the help of bmg, columbia, at al. for myself, i'm considering joining yourmusic to fill in some box set gaps, even though i own 90% of the material represented in said boxes. yourmusic's boxes are priced right. regards, -e- Quote
Ron S Posted December 11, 2006 Report Posted December 11, 2006 good clarification, ron. i didn't mean to come off as i were denegrating clubs. Too late--I've already taken great personal offense. Actually, their box sets usually are the exact same ones sold in the stores, with NO BMG Direct bar code. I've ordered many box sets from BMG and yourmusic.com, and iirc, only one (Sonny Rollins Prestige) had a BMG Direct bar code, and other than that it's identical to those sold elsewhere. Quote
