Guest akanalog Posted January 11, 2005 Report Posted January 11, 2005 what's up with this dude? i really liked him on the nucleus live in bremen 1971 CD. but then i checked out his own live at the i.c.a. album and didn't like it-i mean i should have knows since it was reissued on some hip jim o'rourke label but anyway... i have heard of some other albums he has done-like one called "dragon hill". sounds like it could be less skronky than the i.c.a. stuff, but who can trust or take seriously a thom jurek review. the reason i do not like the i.c.a. stuff is that it is skronky AND the rhythm section is too loose. it has sort of a white british washy herky jerky thing going on. i need something a bit more earthbound holding things down. either way, he seems to be an intriguing player. A Lark Ascending Posted January 11, 2005 Report Posted January 11, 2005 Listen to him on Gil Evans 'The British Orchestra' from the early 80s. A very nice 'Little Wing'. I only have one of his own recordings which does not stand out for me. Quote
Guest akanalog Posted January 11, 2005 Report Posted January 11, 2005 which album do you own by him? just so i don't purchase it. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted January 11, 2005 Report Posted January 11, 2005 'Dragon Hill' I've just put it on to see if it makes more sense! Quote
sidewinder Posted January 11, 2005 Report Posted January 11, 2005 (edited) I remember seeing Ray Russell in that Gil Evans orchestra during one of their weeks at Ronnie Scotts. He fitted very nicely into that lineup (along with Surman, Don Weller and co.) I believe that after that tour Gil returned to Europe to play in Russell's group at the Montreux Fest, so they must have got along pretty well. 'Dragon Hill' was originally put out on CBS Realm I believe.. Edited January 11, 2005 by sidewinder Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted January 11, 2005 Report Posted January 11, 2005 I have 1999 reissue from the brief Columbia British reissue series. Just played it again - not one worth worrying about, to my mind. The guitar sounds very tinny. Quote
medjuck Posted January 11, 2005 Report Posted January 11, 2005 I've got a Ray Russell cd where Gil Evans plays on a couple of cuts, the RMS with Gil at Montreux cd and a DVD of the latter which includes a lot of RMS without Gil. I didn't find the non-Gil cuts very interesting. But then I'm not really into fusion. Quote
