Hardbopjazz Posted January 11, 2005 Report Posted January 11, 2005 I just bought Johnny Griffin's Argo session called "Johnny Griffin". A great album, but it is only 26 minutes long. Has anyone else bought any CD's that were real short? Quote
Joe Posted January 11, 2005 Report Posted January 11, 2005 Miles Davis' lone Debut session, BLUE MOODS. Mingus, Teddy Charles, Britt Woodman, and Elvin Jones. App. 27 minutes, but a fascinating 27 minutes all the same. Quote
WD45 Posted January 11, 2005 Report Posted January 11, 2005 I have Albert Ayler's Bells, and it is 19 minutes or so, I think. Quote
king ubu Posted January 11, 2005 Report Posted January 11, 2005 I have Albert Ayler's Bells, and it is 19 minutes or so, I think. That was a one-sided 12 inch LP, if I remember right! Quote
brownie Posted January 11, 2005 Report Posted January 11, 2005 I have Albert Ayler's Bells, and it is 19 minutes or so, I think. That was a one-sided 12 inch LP, if I remember right! It was! And there was more music on that one-sided 19-minute LP than on many of the 77 or 79-minute CDs that come out thesedays! Quote
etherbored Posted January 11, 2005 Report Posted January 11, 2005 +/- 30 minutes... woefully short! -e- ps: the list could go on and on. Quote
Guy Berger Posted January 11, 2005 Report Posted January 11, 2005 The Beatles, A Hard Day's Night Nick Drake, Pink Moon Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted January 11, 2005 Report Posted January 11, 2005 Clifford Jordan's two volumes of "Glass Bead Games" were both pretty short. When they first came out on CD in the late 80's, I couldn't believe they released them separately as two CD's, one about 29 minutes, and the other like 33 or 34. Cripes!!! Then the Charly release of this title came out, and thankfully they combined both volumes on one disc. Quote
Big Al Posted January 11, 2005 Report Posted January 11, 2005 Vince Guaraldi's OH GOOD GRIEF, his debut on Warner Bros. Quote

AfricaBrass Posted January 11, 2005 Report Posted January 11, 2005 Miles Davis' lone Debut session, BLUE MOODS. Mingus, Teddy Charles, Britt Woodman, and Elvin Jones. App. 27 minutes, but a fascinating 27 minutes all the same. I held off buying that album for years because of the short playing time. I'm so happy I gave in and bought it. Quote
DTMX Posted January 11, 2005 Report Posted January 11, 2005 I thought this one would be short, but it turned out to be rather long... Quote
Swinging Swede Posted January 11, 2005 Report Posted January 11, 2005 Some of the Verve LPR reissues are really short. Lalo Schifrin’s Piano, Strings and Bossa Nova is 28:26. Sergio Mendes’ Equinox (although I don’t have it) adds up to about 25-26 minutes! That’s pretty amazing for a 12" LP! The one Hardbopjazz mentioned is also from this series, and I think there are other ones. The shortest CD I have though is Fresh Sound’s Sonny Criss Quartet 1949-1957 which clocks in at 20:09! The music that’s actually on it is very good though. Quote
mikeweil Posted January 11, 2005 Report Posted January 11, 2005 Many 1950's Lps were only a few minutes longer than 30, but several Savoys were shorter. The original Joao Gilberto bossa nova Lps were all under 30 minutes too. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted January 11, 2005 Report Posted January 11, 2005 A short rational (I hope) reason for short cds is they reflect lps recorded in a day when union rules dictated everything. Union contracts were written to reflect 3 hour sessions producing 15 minutes of material for issue. Any music (or session) longer required "over time" payments. During those days I always negotiated a deal for 3 sessions (9 hours in the studio) for 45 minutes of music whether that was the result or not. Quote

I wonder where I picked it up in the first place. anyhow, thanks for posting. Quote
JSngry Posted January 12, 2005 Report Posted January 12, 2005 JAZZ WAVE, LTD ON TOUR (BST 89905 - "Solid State Series") - a 2-LP set. Check this out: Side One - 22:15; fine, especially since it has a great Thad & Mel cut w/some smokin' Joe Henderson. Side Two - 15:00; iffy, but not unusual. Side Three - 8:21; I kid you not. A Jimmy McGriff w/Thad & Mel cut @ 5:50 & a Kenny Burrell solo take of "People" @ 2:41. That's it. WTF? Side Four - 16:00; too late, Bubba, you done blew it. 8:21?????????? Quote

JSngry Posted January 12, 2005 Report Posted January 12, 2005 Yep, you're right. I shouldn't do math on a full stomach. Quote
LAL Posted January 12, 2005 Report Posted January 12, 2005 CD with the shortest playing time I've come across is Slayer's Haunting The Chapel, at a lengthy 17 minutes. Fortunately, all my jazz CDs have more than 31 minutes of music. Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted January 12, 2005 Report Posted January 12, 2005 Robt Plant's oldies side-project EP, The Honey Drippers was about 17 min. and lots of C&W LPs were under 30 including some plum brilliant ones by Willie in the '80s. It's not how long, it's how good, least that's what I always say... Quote
GA Russell Posted January 14, 2005 Report Posted January 14, 2005 I think my shortest jazz CD is Buddy Rich's The Best Band I've Ever Had, which clocks in at 29:55. Quote
Shawn Posted January 14, 2005 Report Posted January 14, 2005 CD with the shortest playing time I've come across is Slayer's Haunting The Chapel, at a lengthy 17 minutes. True. But that was originally a 3-track 12-inch single...there is an extra track on the CD. Actually, same band. Slayer's classic Reign In Blood clocks in at 28 minutes or so...but it's probably the most perfect 28 minutes in Heavy Metal. Quote
