DTMX Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 Ray Charles would break out the alto sax during the occasional concert. Jaki Byard recorded on trumpet, sax, cello, vibes, and guitar. Charles Moffett played trumpet and vibes with Ornette. Quote
Gary Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 What, nobody's said Sam Rivers yet?? Tenor, Soprano, Flute, and Piano -- all of which he's recorded on multiple times. Sam's group since the mid-90's includes a couple younger guys who both switch-up too... Doug Matthews, bass, plus bass clarinet Anthony Cole, drums, plus tenor sax Anthony Coles plays some mean piano too. From what I can gather AEC had a fair crack of the whip at playing various instruments. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted January 8, 2005 Report Posted January 8, 2005 Hal Russell played a mean tenor (if he wanted), just to add to the above listing. Hal added tenor late in his (second) life. When drummer Hal attended university he discovered they didn't give certificates/diplomas for percussion so he switched to trumpet. He loved Trane's Interstellar Space and was really impressed when I introduced him to Evan Parker (on record). Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted January 8, 2005 Report Posted January 8, 2005 Met a tenor player once who could beat the shit out of any drummer or trombonist he met. Talk about talent! Quote
marcello Posted January 8, 2005 Report Posted January 8, 2005 I just received a super obscure LP which introduced me to a British guy who played with John Mayall and made a single jazz album with the likes of Curtis Amy, Hadley Caliman, Vi Redd and Joe Pass: Johnny Almond. On the LP he plays: alto tenor flute vibes organ and something else I can't think of at the moment. Good LP, its coming out as a Japanese reissue soon and I'm going to start a thread to alert people about it. I saw his Marc/Almond band in about 1970 or so when, I found out later, that Danny Richmond was the drummer during a time away for Mingus The band was pretty popular during the short time of "undeground" rock radio. Very musical! Quote
alankin Posted January 8, 2005 Report Posted January 8, 2005 Amongst the younger cats, Jeb Bishop on trombone, guitar and bass guitar. (He's stuck to 'bone for the last few years.) Quote

tooter Posted January 8, 2005 Report Posted January 8, 2005 I don't think Ira Sullivan has had a look in here yet - trumpet, flugel, sop sax, tenor, flute I have him on - perhaps there's more. Quote
JSngry Posted January 8, 2005 Report Posted January 8, 2005 How 'bout that Roy Wood? he got wombled Ohhhhhhh, so THAT'S what it was! Quote
tooter Posted January 8, 2005 Report Posted January 8, 2005 Zbigniew Namysloski started out on trombone at the tradional end and then switched to alto. Quote
couw Posted January 8, 2005 Report Posted January 8, 2005 Zbigniew Namysloski started out on trombone at the tradional end and then switched to alto. indeed! I have an ancient 10" somewhere which features him on trombone with a "revival" band. He plays soprano sax as well I believe. Quote
brownie Posted January 8, 2005 Report Posted January 8, 2005 Stephane Grapelli played piano and violin! Quote
Brownian Motion Posted January 8, 2005 Report Posted January 8, 2005 Charlie Barnet played bells. Quote

king ubu Posted January 10, 2005 Report Posted January 10, 2005 Hal Russell played a mean tenor (if he wanted), just to add to the above listing. Hal added tenor late in his (second) life. He loved Trane's Interstellar Space and was really impressed when I introduced him to Evan Parker (on record). He is, pardon, was, an absolutely fascinating figure! I love his tenor playing on "The Hal Russell Story". Thanks for sharing your insight! Quote

mikeweil Posted January 10, 2005 Report Posted January 10, 2005 Did anyone mentioned Dizzy Reece yet? Trumpet AND Congas. Dizzy Gillespie, too. And bassist Al McKibbon - both he and Dizzy learned it from Chano Pozo. Quote
