king ubu Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 not exactly jazz, but... PRINCE!!! Quote
king ubu Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 the Yusef Lateef group also played things like balloons... And Hal Russell played a mean tenor (if he wanted), just to add to the above listing. Quote
couw Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 Helmut "Joe" Sachse: geee tarrr, guitarcase, screwdriver & flute. plus eyebrows. Quote
JSngry Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 Billy Higgins, Elvin Jones, & Walter Booker all played guitar. Quote
JSngry Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 I just received a super obscure LP which introduced me to a British guy who played with John Mayall and made a single jazz album with the likes of Curtis Amy, Hadley Caliman, Vi Redd and Joe Pass: Johnny Almond. That would be the "Almond" half of The Mark-Almond Band, an early 70s "jazz-rock" band that Dannie Richmond left Mingus to join. Not to be confused with today's Marc Almond Band, of whom surely I'm not the only one who chuckled at being the only one who recognized the homophonic name from decades past. Quote
JSngry Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 but did they play eyebrows? Only those which they managed to raise. Billy was pretty a pretty tasty guitarist, if the few examples I've heard are any indication. Quote
AllenLowe Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 Jabbo Smith had the most beautiful singing voice I ever heard - Quote
JSngry Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 And how 'bout that Barbara Mandrell? Quote

JSngry Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 (edited) I seriously doubt it. Edited January 7, 2005 by JSngry Quote

brownie Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 Benny Goodman played the eye, and also some clarinet... Tubby Hayes, vibraphone and saxophone Lionel Hampton, piano, drums and vibraphone Quote
BeBop Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 I believe Jaki Byard also played piano. (...in addition to saxophone and trumpet) And Herbie Mann and Sam Most both play(ed) a nice tenor sax, in addition to flute. Than again, flute/sax doubling isn't much of a novelty. Quote
Joe Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 Billy was pretty a pretty tasty guitarist, if the few examples I've heard are any indication. Not to mention a great vocalist ("Slow Drag"...) Quote
Jim R Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 The first name that popped into my head when I saw this was Bill Champlin (Sons of Champlin / Chicago), who is a great singer, writer, and plays keyboards, guitar and reeds. I once heard that he also plays drums quite well (I don't doubt it). Quote
Alexander Hawkins Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 If the post does its job, I'm hoping to start investigating Mr Braxton's piano playing in the next few days! Quote
Brownian Motion Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 Haven't we done this before? Here's a bunch of older guys- Frank "Big Boy" Goudie played trumpet, tenor sax, and clarinet. Jabbo Smith played trombone. Denzil Best played trumpet and drums. Joe Bushkin-trumpet, piano Eddie Durham-trombone, guitar Bobby Hackett-guitar and cornet Ray Biondi-guitar & violin Pete Brown-alto sax and trumpet Tommy Dorsey-trumpet, trombone Quote
