garthsj Posted January 4, 2005 Report Posted January 4, 2005 (edited) I was doing some research on Charlie Parker, and came across this item ... I wonder if the Parker estate gets anything from this? By the way, there is a PDF file of the brochure that is very interesting... http://www.oris.ch/english/watches/jazz/parker.htm Edited January 4, 2005 by garthsj Quote
Brad Posted January 4, 2005 Report Posted January 4, 2005 I don't see a price for this but I've got the feeling it's very expensive. Quote
Spontooneous Posted January 4, 2005 Report Posted January 4, 2005 I don't see a price for this but I've got the feeling it's very expensive. To any jazz fan who's thinking about spending big bucks on a Bird vanity item: Instead, please consider spending a comparable amount of money on Parker recordings that you will donate to schools and libraries in your area. Or on other activities to foster and propagate jazz in your community. Quote
BeBop Posted January 5, 2005 Report Posted January 5, 2005 I haven't seen the Bird in a while, and the Miles may have reached the end of its 999 unit run. The Duke Ellington is still around. Quote
garthsj Posted January 5, 2005 Author Report Posted January 5, 2005 In checking this out online, I think I saw a price of $1,550 .... it is hard to judge if this is a fair price or not depending on the quality of the timepiece itself... Quite frankly I would rather have the music .... Quote
BeBop Posted January 5, 2005 Report Posted January 5, 2005 The Duke has been priced at around $900 when I've seen it. Then again, it's not OOP. Quote
JohnJ Posted January 5, 2005 Report Posted January 5, 2005 They have the Oris Charlie Parker in a little shop over the road from my office. The price is around $630 which seems quite reasonable. Quote
mgraham333 Posted January 5, 2005 Report Posted January 5, 2005 (edited) Looks like there are a couple of others too. Including a McCoy Tyner. Here. Edited January 5, 2005 by mgraham333 Quote
couw Posted January 5, 2005 Report Posted January 5, 2005 is there a little bird that pops out every hour to call the time? Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted January 5, 2005 Report Posted January 5, 2005 It's all right looking, but not as cool as my SpongeBob watch from Burger King. Quote
Ron S Posted January 5, 2005 Report Posted January 5, 2005 I just wish I still had the Hopalong Cassidy watch my grandparents gave me around 1961. Now THAT was a BEAUT (and probably worth hundreds today, even though at least half the members of this Board probably have absolutely NO idea who Hopalong Cassidy was). Quote
Peter Johnson Posted January 5, 2005 Report Posted January 5, 2005 is there a little bird that pops out every hour to call the time? Yes, it chirps, like C.P.'s reed... Quote
Brad Posted January 5, 2005 Report Posted January 5, 2005 That's a little to expensive for these tastes. Quote

MartyJazz Posted January 5, 2005 Report Posted January 5, 2005 A creative friend of mine who has since passed away once took apart a cheap watch and artistically inserted letters on the face of the watch. Once in a while I would wear it and whenever I would reflexively look at my wrist to see what time it was, I would read those letters instead. It said, "NOW'S THE TIME". And I would always chuckle. And damn, I've lost (or seriously misplaced) that watch. Quote

After seeing your post, I did a Google Images search and found the same photo--they want $150 for it (the watch, not the photo)! DAMN--if I only still had that Roy Rogers lunchbox I got in '62! Quote
AllenLowe Posted January 5, 2005 Report Posted January 5, 2005 Apparently the Charlie Paker watch appears to run a little bit fast, but actually keeps perfect time - Quote

BeBop Posted January 5, 2005 Report Posted January 5, 2005 So, what do you want, an accurate watch or a syncopated one? Quote
Ron S Posted January 5, 2005 Report Posted January 5, 2005 (edited) I hear that in Toronto they sell a Charlie Parker watch made out of plasic. Edited January 5, 2005 by Ron S Quote
BeBop Posted January 5, 2005 Report Posted January 5, 2005 I used to carry a pocket watch on a chain. It swung. Quote
mmilovan Posted January 9, 2005 Report Posted January 9, 2005 And Miles, too? Nah, I didn't even know what present I've received for Christamas. Ok, it's close to Miles watch, not exactly that type of watch, but close. B-) Quote
