Big Al Posted January 3, 2005 Report Posted January 3, 2005 Now that the Herbie Hancock CBS box is in a regular slip-cover packaging, is it worth getting? Is the music all that spectacular? Quote
GregK Posted January 3, 2005 Report Posted January 3, 2005 (edited) I have the funky cube box, which is annoying to use and so I don't listen to it often. However, the first 2 discs are very nice, all acoustic, from the VSOP to the solo stuff. Some previously unreleased in America-I can't remember how many or exactly which, but it's a pretty good chunk. Sorry I'm so vague on this-it's too much trouble to open the damn thing and pry the booklet out and then chase after the discs as they roll down the hall because the box isn't designed to exactly be usable-I can tolerate a little bit of disc 3, with the early electric stuff (Head Hunters, etc), but most of the rest of discs 3 and 4 are from the horrible electric years (Rockit, etc). I got it for about $35, but I wouldn't pay more than that for it. Also, in the liners is an interview with him, where he has comments about the songs Edited January 3, 2005 by GregK Quote
Enterprise Server Posted January 4, 2005 Report Posted January 4, 2005 I saw that box and I could not believe someone would authorize it to be released. It is pathetic. A great diservice to Hancocks music. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted January 4, 2005 Report Posted January 4, 2005 Anybody got a picture of the new packaging??? Looked at a couple on-line retailers, and they didn't have it ("image not available"), and none of the listings on eBay had a pic either. Sounds from the eBay descriptions I've read, that it's a long-box, not unlike the new versions of the Miles Columbia boxes (or the Herbie or Dexter BN boxes). In my case, I dislike "long-box" boxes, cuz I can't file them with all my other CD's. And since this is a compilation anyway, probably the best thing for me would be the promo CD's, which are in standard jewel-boxes (or so I've heard). Quote
jazzbo Posted January 4, 2005 Report Posted January 4, 2005 The promo version of this was in a four-cd jewel case. . . . Better than the cube! (No booklet though!) Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted January 4, 2005 Report Posted January 4, 2005 If anybody has the promo version, and then decides to spring for the new longbox version -- I'd maybe be interested in taking your promo version off your hands. (And I've got a ton of trade-bate these days, something like 30 or 40 CD's.) Quote
Alfred Posted January 9, 2005 Report Posted January 9, 2005 Anybody got a picture of the new packaging??? IT IS a longbox similar to the BN Hancock or Gordon boxes. Quote
Evonce Posted January 11, 2005 Report Posted January 11, 2005 I bought the cube when it first came out, and it was/is hands down the worst box set packaging I've ever dealt with. When the long box came out, a local record store had a 'promo' copy - shrinkwrapped, no cut outs, perfect condition - for thirty bucks. So I traded in my cube and it was an even swap. Ha! The music goes from one extreme to another, but that's Herbie in the 70s/80s for you. I think it's a decent overview. Quote
king ubu Posted January 11, 2005 Report Posted January 11, 2005 Anybody got a picture of the new packaging??? IT IS a longbox similar to the BN Hancock or Gordon boxes. Looks the same as the Miles longboxes, and there's such an edition now of the Monk 3CD set of Columbia's (which I like a lot in it's cube-version). They're all out here, at least since mid-December.
