maren Posted December 30, 2004 Report Posted December 30, 2004 (edited) Cool story in today's NY Times arts section. After reading that long "copyright" thread here a few months ago, I wonder how much I should paste here? You need to register (for free) to read the story and see the pictures at http://www.nytimes.com/2004/12/30/arts/design/30flora.html. But here's one of them: Edited December 30, 2004 by maren Quote

Brad Posted December 31, 2004 Report Posted December 31, 2004 Great article, especially the Pete Jolly cover. Another under appreciated talent like Reid Miles. Quote
BFrank Posted December 31, 2004 Report Posted December 31, 2004 I enjoyed that article, too. Great art! Thanks, Jim, for the link! Quote
Jim R Posted December 31, 2004 Report Posted December 31, 2004 On a related note, this wonderful article written by board member Joe Milazzo was linked in the "Jazz Blogs" thread awhile back: http://www.bagatellen.com/archives/frontpa...00664.html#more Quote

Chalupa Posted September 23, 2009 Report Posted September 23, 2009 I was showing the Jim Flora websites to one of our Art History grad students today and she said,"He's great. Too bad you didn't tell me about him 6 months ago when I was looking for a dissertation topic." Oh well..... Quote
Clunky Posted September 24, 2009 Report Posted September 24, 2009 (edited) Love the cover of Nick Travis' The Panic is on this superb album, probably been out on CD courtesy of the Spainish at some point but mine's an HMV LP which I treasure. edited to remove link check Jim Flora site Edited September 24, 2009 by Clunky Quote
sonnymax Posted September 24, 2009 Report Posted September 24, 2009 Flora art - it's not just for album covers: Check out this devils food cake from Brooklyn's JollyBe Bakery: Floraphile Shannon Wade, of Portland, combined elements from the covers of The Pete Jolly Duo and Mambo for Cats into her tattoo. Jim R Posted September 24, 2009 Report Posted September 24, 2009 Flora art - it's not just for album covers... You ain't kidding, and you may not even realize how right you are! I didn't realize how much he'd done outside of LP covers (and I'm pretty sure I had at least one book that he illustrated when I was a kid... early 60's era). If you're a fan of his art, you NEED to check the following sites out carefully, and follow every link you can find. It's truly amazing how much there is to discover. On one site, there's even a page of interesting vintage album covers (some may be familiar to you, others probably not) that are often mistakenly credited to Flora. http://jimflora.com/index.html http://jimfloraart.com/home.html http://jimflora.blogspot.com/ As of right now, the link I posted several years ago (above, to the Bagatellen site) and also the one brownie posted are still working. Man with the Golden Arm Posted September 24, 2009 Report Posted September 24, 2009 A good friend from back at American Greetings (the card company that once housed Crumb et moi) has an illustration blog with a nice tip to Flora. Samba For Rats Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted February 2, 2019 Report Posted February 2, 2019 (edited) Bumpity bump. My wife went to an estate sale yesterday and picked up the Haydn box set and Jimmy Dorsey 10" album, both with Jim Flora cover art. I married well. Can we move this thread to the artists sub-forum?  Edited February 2, 2019 by Teasing the Korean Quote
Big Beat Steve Posted February 4, 2019 Report Posted February 4, 2019 Just took the plunge and ordered a copy of The High Fidelity Art of Jim Flora (the third of the Flora books done by collator Irvin Chusid) online. I also am on the lookout for a decently priced copy of The Mischievous Art of Jim Flora (of which i became aware only very recently too) but I am a bit wary about the references of an online seller of the the most affordable one found so far. I'll keep searching ... Quote
Big Beat Steve Posted February 8, 2019 Report Posted February 8, 2019 (edited) I just received my copy of The High Fidelity Art of Jim Flora. According to the descriptions I had figured this was a thematic supplement to The Mischievous Art of Jim Flora (which already contained many album covers) that features MORE album covers that had been discovered in the meantime, plus Jim Flora artwork for various other music-related documents (leaflets, brochures etc.). But browsing through it now I see it includes a huge album cover section with all the usual suspects and more (the Sauter-Finegans, Nick Travis, Barnet, Shorty Rogers, Bix & Tram etc.). So it looks to me like the High Fidelity book SUPERSEDES and replaces the Mischievous book for those who are mainly interested in the music-related art of Jim Flora. (Which would suit me fine as this is what I am primarily interested in for now and I do not own the Mischievous book yet) Is there anybody out there who has both books and can confirm or correct this? Big Beat Steve Posted March 31, 2023 Report Posted March 31, 2023 Went to the bi-annual secondhand record clearout sale at our #1 local record store today. Everything (tens of thousands of items) priced at 1 EUR. Came away with quite a few scoops (mostly CDs this time). And to top things, I found a copy of the "Till Eulenspiegel" U.S. original (RCA Victor Red Seal LM 1891). I will now have to find a place on the wall to display it. And I might drop by the shop again tomorrow for their second Sale day and check out the Classical section, looking for more Flora covers. Classical music LPs with Jim Flora covers somehow should be more likely finds than jazz LPs. (But of course I would not mind finding a copy of the Fresh Sound reissue of The Panic Is On either - my original 3-EP set will do nicely but it lacks one tune of the LP, and of course the LP-size cover is even more impressive ) Quote
