Peter Johnson Posted December 30, 2004 Report Posted December 30, 2004 So is Korla Pandit in/out? Nice new avatar, Jeff! Quote
Soul Stream Posted December 30, 2004 Report Posted December 30, 2004 Alfredson, Big Al and Soul Stream need to "get right"! No mention of the greatest organ record of all time - "Face to Face". I once wrote "this record is the reason God allowed Mr Hammond to desecrate the organ". You're damn right Chuck. Baby Face Willette's "Face To Face" is one of the Top Ten for SURE. Knew I had forgotten somebody very important. O.K>Shirley Scott "Queen of the Organ" just got bumped to "honorable mention." Forgetting, Baby Face. Damn me to hell. No no NO no NO NO NO!!! "Queen of the Organ" is a KILLER date! It is worth the price of admission for Stanley's outro on "Just in Time" alone. If we have to take off one, take off Bashin'. Oh, I forgot to tell you..."Bashin'" was gone when "Alligator Bogaloo" HAD to be added. Now that Baby Face is on board, well....so long Shirley (Besides the best Shirley is actually Turrentine's "Dearly Beloved" where she is Little Miss Cott and plays her own bass AND kills on everything. ) Quote
neveronfriday Posted December 30, 2004 Report Posted December 30, 2004 10. Charles Earland - Black Talk 9. Jimmy McGriff - I Got A Woman 8. Shirley Scott - Queen of the Organ 7. Don Patterson - The Exciting New Organ of Don Patterson 6. Jack McDuff - LIVE! 5. Groove Holmes - Living Soul 4. Larry Young - Unity 3. Big John Patton - Understanding 2. Jimmy Smith - Bashin' 1. Jimmy Smith - The Sermon I don't have any of these. Are they good? Quote
wolff Posted December 30, 2004 Report Posted December 30, 2004 I have only have 3 from the list. No Earland No McGriff as leader. No Patterson that I know of. No McDuff No Groove Holmes 10-20 Smith's. A few Scott's. Most of Patton's BN's. Young Mosaic. Willette's Stop and Listen Most of Roach's BN's. And am listening to George PapaGeorge as a sideman at the moment. Not bad considering none are ceedees. Please do not ban me!! Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted December 30, 2004 Report Posted December 30, 2004 I'm a huge B-3 fan and own 7 of the 10. In fact, I used to own all 10 but sold three of them. I didn't care for "Bashin'" and I found McDuff's "Live" to be poorly recorded. Got tons of McDuff however, and he's a big favorite. To the Top Ten, I wish to add a few more: Patton, "Got a Good thing Goin" Patton, "That Certain Feeling" Lonnie Smith, "Move Your Hand" Don Patterson, "Live at the Left Bank" "Further Adventures of Jimmy and Wes" Don Patterson, "Boppin and Burning" Charles Earland, "Intensity" A whole bunch of Richard Groove Holmes (hard to pick a single title) Jimmy Smith, "Live at Small's Paradise" Jimmy Smith, "Root Down" Jimmy Smith, "The Master" Jack McDuff, "Double barreled soul" etc... cannonball-addict Posted December 30, 2004 Report Posted December 30, 2004 How about Joey D and Tony Monaco? I know this list is classics but both these guys can hang. Also - Gene Ludwig! Quote

brownie Posted December 30, 2004 Report Posted December 30, 2004 I don't have the McGriff and the Groove Holmes. But I have the mono BN of Baby Face Willette's'Face To Face'. That one counts for two (or TEN!)! Am I allowed in? pleeeeeeaaaaaaase Quote
marcoliv Posted December 30, 2004 Report Posted December 30, 2004 ok, i have the first 4 titles on the list..... can i have 90 days to get the others & confirm my subscription here? Marcus Quote

JSngry Posted December 30, 2004 Report Posted December 30, 2004 All this organ shit is getting old. I say we take over the board and initiate a new, crisp, fresh, HIP instrument theme!... The opening track to this album has all the jazz triangle you'll ever want to hear. Quote
JSngry Posted December 30, 2004 Report Posted December 30, 2004 So is Korla Pandit in/out? Are you asking about the list or the music? Quote
Stefan Wood Posted December 31, 2004 Report Posted December 31, 2004 (edited) I have all the albums by all the guys mentioned on the list. Can I be elevated to Grand Master status??????? Edited December 31, 2004 by Stefan Wood Quote
gdogus Posted December 31, 2004 Report Posted December 31, 2004 I hate to add more to the list, but really... On the one hand, ...and on the other... Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted December 31, 2004 Author Report Posted December 31, 2004 I hate it when that happens. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted December 31, 2004 Report Posted December 31, 2004 I'm not that up on organ records. I like this one: Would that fit the oft used definition on this board 'greasy'? Quote
JSngry Posted December 31, 2004 Report Posted December 31, 2004 Would that fit the oft used definition on this board 'greasy'? Well, "Messian" could be pronounced "Messy Ann", so yeah, sure! Quote
CJ Shearn Posted January 1, 2005 Report Posted January 1, 2005 Jim, I only have "The Sermon" in addition to about 30 other Smith albums, Unity, McDuff's Live, Screamin' and the Patton Mosaic set. am I banned? Quote

Soul Stream Posted January 1, 2005 Report Posted January 1, 2005 (edited) great, i can't log on for days and i miss the best greazzze chat of the year. i only have 3/10 of the first 10 brother jack - live - emusic the king - the sermon patton - understanding - mosaic set no mention of vick's "steppin' out"...... ss1 Vick's "Steppin' Out" is definately an organ "Must Have." But seriously, us "organ snobs" are as hardcore as serious "jazz snobs." If you claim to be a serious jazz fan and don't have "Kind Of Blue" or "Giant Steps"....I mean we can all pretty much agree those are acoustic jazz' 101. And by the same degree these Organ Top Ten are the bible of jazz organ in my book. If you don't have these, then you shouldn't buy the latest organ thing until you have these....just my opinion. Yes, these 10 (or 11-12ish) titles that I and Jim are going back and forth on SHOULD be in your jazz collection if you are a fan of organ. Roughly, they are... 1. Jimmy Smith "The Sermon" 2. Larry Young "Unity" 3. Don Patterson "The Exciting New Organ Of" 4. Lou Donaldson "Alligator Bogaloo" 5. John Patton "Understanding" 6. Charles Earland "Black Talk" 7. Jack McDuff "Live" 8. Jimmy McGriff "I've Got A Woman" 9. Baby Face Willette "Face To Face" 10. Groove Holmes "Soul Message" 11. Shirley Scott "One For Me" Of course there are MANY, MANY that are really, really damn close to these....definately 3 or 4 more ESSENTIAL Jimmy Smith titles including "Organ Grinder Swing", Johnny Hammond Smith's "Black Coffee", Lou Donaldson's "Natural Soul", Grant Green's "Talkin' About" and "Grantstand" and on and on.... But you should try and get these 10 or 11 first if you can. They are all easily available now (wasn't always the case), except for S. Scott's "One For Me" which has never been on CD. But Scott's "Queen of the Organ" is just as good place to start and then is VERY easy to find in most any used or new CD store. "Face to Face" is OOP, but the JRVG is around at Dusty Groove and comes up on EBAY pretty frequently. Edited January 1, 2005 by Soul Stream Quote
chris olivarez Posted January 2, 2005 Report Posted January 2, 2005 Or maybe after auditioning for Arthur Brown's band? Mike when was this picture taken? I saw the dude when Vincent Crane was his B3 player and Carl Palmer was his drummer. I didn't think he was still making music. As for the rest of you guys thanks for giving me further reasons to flatten my wallet even more. Quote
Herb Posted January 2, 2005 Report Posted January 2, 2005 I thought "Crazy" Arthur Brown died in the last year or two? Am I just confused? Quote
