gdogus Posted December 28, 2004 Report Posted December 28, 2004 Is there anywhere on-line that I can find jazz cd covers to scan? Thanks, Mark Not sure I understand - if they're online, haven't they been scanned (i.e., digitized) already? Quote
wesbed Posted December 28, 2004 Report Posted December 28, 2004 Is there anywhere on-line that I can find jazz cd covers to scan? Thanks, Mark Not sure I understand - if they're online, haven't they been scanned (i.e., digitized) already? I was thinking the exact same thing. If they're online, they've aleady been scanned. If they haven't been scanned (or something of the sort)... I'm thinking they're probably not online Quote
sheldonm Posted December 29, 2004 Author Report Posted December 29, 2004 OK, I'll try again. I have some cds that I inherited; some of the covers are in horrible shape or in the case of a few, missing. I am looking for an on-line source where I may be able to download a copy of the cover to use as an insert in the jewel case. A few are BN but most are not. Thanks, Mark Quote
Jim R Posted December 29, 2004 Report Posted December 29, 2004 I used to have some good sources for this, but many have dried up over the past few years (Walmart used to offer nice large scans, for example). For awhile, there were some Japanese and Korean sites that had a lot of large scans. These seem to come and go. The best bet is probably to try Amazon, and/or use Google. Sometimes I don't find what I'm looking for using a Google Image search, but if I use a regular web (text) search and then open the various links that come up, I often find a nice image that way. If you could list some (or all) of the titles you need, I'd be glad to try to help out (we could post them here for you)... Quote
jazzbo Posted December 29, 2004 Report Posted December 29, 2004 Walmart can still be a good source for popular cds. Dusty Groove is good too, and Amazon. . . . Or so I've heard. . . Quote
Jim R Posted December 29, 2004 Report Posted December 29, 2004 Dusty Groove is good too... I knew that! B-) Quote
tooter Posted December 29, 2004 Report Posted December 29, 2004 If you could list some (or all) of the titles you need, I'd be glad to try to help out (we could post them here for you)... Can anyone join in here? I have been looking for album cover pictures where the personnel included Ronnie Ross for some time and have had some success. They are for the discography I have done for him www.ronnieross.com. I am still missing quite a lot and of course they are hard to come by. I will do a list and post it here if that 's okay with you, Mark. I have asked elsewhere but limited response. If the ones you are looking for are rare, I have found a good source to be eBay, although the posted pictures are of variable quality. It is possible, however, to improve them quite a lot if you have the expertise and the software. Images are dotted around all over the place. Google image searches do not produce much in my experience - it is necessary to use much broader searches and trawl through all the possibilities, one by one, until you strike lucky. Quote

I agree completely. I've done a lot of editing of eBay images (LP sellers tend to photograph covers from an angle), but sometimes it's the only place to find rare images. And yes, like I said, Google can be very helpful, but you sometimes have to be persistent in going through several links. A Google Image search alone only works occasionally in finding a CD-sized scan. As for the Ronnie Ross, that sounds like a difficult proposition, but you never know what might turn up. I wonder if the talented Mr. couw has seen this topic yet (he has a knack for finding images, and of course editing them). Quote
tooter Posted December 29, 2004 Report Posted December 29, 2004 (edited) So here's my list. It's long:- (transferred to Artists Forum - Ronnie Ross thread) Edited January 6, 2005 by tooter Quote
Jim R Posted December 29, 2004 Report Posted December 29, 2004 tooter, I'm not sure which cover you have for the Wes (Philology) recording, but this is the one I have (found it on a Japanese site... wish it were a bit larger): Quote
tooter Posted December 29, 2004 Report Posted December 29, 2004 Jim, Just looked at this - it looks better than the one I've got already. Thanks. I will try putting it up tomorrow, as well as correcting all the errors that my compiling the list revealed. Always more to do. Quote
tooter Posted December 30, 2004 Report Posted December 30, 2004 The Wes picture is on our site now - definitely better version, Jim. Thanks. Quote
Jim R Posted December 30, 2004 Report Posted December 30, 2004 I'm glad it was an improvement, tooter. Still no luck with any of the other titles from your list that I've had time to check on, but I'll keep looking... Quote
tooter Posted December 30, 2004 Report Posted December 30, 2004 Jim: Please don't spend too long on it. I have looked high and low, searching for titles and numbers separately with Google and other search engines. Many of the albums are not so much rare as obscure. Whether they should form part of a "jazz" discography I have not been able to ascertain as mostly I cannot hear them. I am hoping that a bell might ring with someone if they happen to see a cover on their travels around the web, or maybe even have (or come into the possession of) an album itself. Thanks a lot for trying. Quote
Jim R Posted December 30, 2004 Report Posted December 30, 2004 No problem, tooter. I suppose I was encouraged by the fact that I found something on the first try (the Wes). I hope Mr. Sheldon will report back... anything would be easier than finding the images tooter's looking for! Quote
sidewinder Posted December 30, 2004 Report Posted December 30, 2004 Tooter - here's a slanted shot (sorry, I've nothing better) of the Bill LeSage 'Road To Ellingtonia' LP with good Mr Ross.. Quote
mgraham333 Posted December 30, 2004 Report Posted December 30, 2004 I used some perspective correction tools on the Road To Ellingtonia. Here it is: Quote
tooter Posted December 31, 2004 Report Posted December 31, 2004 Is there anything that can't be done on this board? Two new pictures already! Many thanks SW and Matt - marvellous job. Perhaps I could recruit you all to the permanent staff of the Ronnie Ross Discography Support Team (unsalaried!)? I too have been wondering about Mark, Jim. Perhaps he's working on his list , no doubt not so readily to hand as mine. I have a CD of cover pictures given to me by my very good friend Jazzman4133 that holds well over a thousand excellent pictures. But it occurred to me that Mark will probably want the backs and insides as well - much more difficult to find I should think. Quote
tooter Posted December 31, 2004 Report Posted December 31, 2004 The "Road to Ellingtonia" picture has now taken its place in the discography at www.ronnieross.com (never miss a chance to get this in) and is looking good just alongside the new Wes. That 1965 section is the biggest and is getting close to a full house of pictures (some sessions have none of course because not albums). Only "Twice Times Keyboard" to go, and a better one of "Cover Lover". Quote
tooter Posted December 31, 2004 Report Posted December 31, 2004 BTW, Jim, I recruited the "talented Mr Couw" to this exercise some time ago and he has already come up trumps quite a few times, with pictures help and other things. Quote
couw Posted January 4, 2005 Report Posted January 4, 2005 to return to the original query, I have noticed that amazon.com has started to post ~500x500px scans instead of 300x300px ones. The latter were a tad too small to produce nice prints. You can recognise the larger scans by the slightly larger size of the thumbnail. If for instance you do a search on Art Blakey w/ amazon.com, you will note that Free For All and Buhaina's Delight have larger thumbnails than Mosaic or Live at Birdland. Quote
