Good gravy, this is just damn hilarious: people saying vicious and hurtful things about a dead man who said vicious and hurtful things while he was living. May we all hold our tongues when it’s your turn.

My God, some of you sound as if he was going after “sinners” with fire and brimstone. And you judge him based on the sound bites. This from folks who never even met the man or spent even a second with the man. Did you not read the quotes from those that did?

Some of you sound damn glad he’s gone. Unbelievable.

Eh? He said some dumb shit.

I don't think anyone said he didn't say dumb shit and I would be the first to agree that he did; only that we all say dumb shit from time to time but we only get bent out of shape about it when someone else does it!

How long before someone mentions how Hitler was probably a swell guy and kind to his friends too?

:w

I'm sure you're not comparing Reggie White to Hitler ;) !

Nonsense.

I'm comparing people who apologize for Mr. White to those who do the same for Hitler. A bit of a stretch, but there's nothing cool about White's stoopid remarks.

So far, the number of those attacking White for his remarks FAR outnumber those who are apologizing/defending his remarks.

  • There is a fundamental difference, Big Al.

If what is being said about White strikes you as "vicious and hurtful," don't blame the person who points that out, blame the person who is being quoted, the person whose expressed opinion is under scrutiny. What White said was indeed vicious and hurtful, whether or not he had the intelligence to realize that, and if bringing that up is vicious and hurtful, well, I think that's a little bit like the under-endowed calling a mirror a liar. <_<

The outpouring of viciousness for this man, who died way too young, leaving a young wife and children behind, tells me one thing:

Christiern and a whole bunch of other people posting here are living saints, perfect human beings who have never done anything wrong, or stupid, or said or done anything that they regret.

We should be thankful that they walk the earth and can show us the way.

But at least I know that when they kick, no one will every say anything nasty about them. They're the most perfect people since that mythical dude Reggie White called his "saviour".

See my previous post that started with the phrase "Nonsense."

This from the asshole who compares White apologists to Hitler apologists.

I'm guessing that with such a small brain that leaves a tremendous amount of room for all the shit in your head.

7/4,

I was being facetious when I questioned you. I knew you weren't making a comparison between the two, just poking at you a bit.

Funny how a successful sports figure can get away with making outrageously bigoted remarks. Also interesting to note how some people are less offended by the remarks themselves than they are by a criticism of them.

I am reminded of the existence/non-existence of WMDs...oh, but that's another story, eh Dan?

Sorry, the name-calling somehow triggered my memory. :D

Also interesting how people put more weight on the comments rather than on the whole man's life.

Especially on one they've never met.

No, but I think I'll give more credence to those who did (those quoted in the ESPN story) than to those who didn't (pretty near everyone in this thread).

Big Al:"Also interesting how people put more weight on the comments rather than on the whole man's life.

  • Yes, one is reminded of all that fuss people made when Belafonte referred to Powell and Rice as House Negroes (to put it politely). Guess they didn't know that he was an accomplished singer/actor. And then there was Jesse Jackson's "Hymie Town" remark, and Rumsfeld's recent... and...and Billy Graham's anti-Semitic remarks, and Falwell's homophobic remarks... and Pat Robertson's gays-cause-hurricanes remark, and ...etc., etc. I mean, what is this world coming to when famous people are criticized for making racist, mean-spirited utterances--where is it not written that celebrity comes with a license to make outrageous, racist, slanderous remarks?

What's even more shocking is that most of the people who dare take offense at offensive remarks have never even met these part-time bigots/full-time stars.

Thank you for pointing out this inequity, Big Al.

I hold mixed feelings for Reggie White.

He was obviously a great football player.

As a human being, he apparently touched the lives of many. He had strong leadership qualities. He was generally a good role model. On the other hand, he came across as highly bigoted and narrowminded. I wouldn't appreciate it if I were on a football team and this defensive end comes up to me and asks me how I'm doing spiritually...

none of your damned business, my fine sir!!

I neither like nor dislike him. He had positive as well as negative qualities. On balance, I think I'm glad he walked the earth.

No need for the offensive shit spouted by 7/4. And Clem--well, Clem is Clem.

I do understand Christiern's points.

Speaking of inequity, you're the one who decided to bring it to everyone's attention what an "outspoken born-again homophobe" White allegedly was.

I am sure there are millions who appreciate your little gesture of "equity."

Oh, and one other thing: none of the folks you listed have passed on. I suspect that when they do, you'll be just as "equitable" to those folks as you are to White.
