tooter Posted December 24, 2004 Report Posted December 24, 2004 So, silly games are in order for Christmas. If Cannonball-addict can do it… My game is called “Jazz Star Chains” and involves stringing together the names of jazz stars in the way given below, which is my best effort so far. Here are the rules:- 1. It is the way the name sounds that is the criterion – for instance, John Lewis/Louis Armstrong is acceptable, whereas Herbie Lewis/Louis Stewart is not as it is pronounced “Louie” Stewart. 2. The name must be that by which the star is usually known – i.e. Count Basie, not William or Bill. 3. The stars must be jazz players or singers and fairly well known. The decision of the judge (that’s me) is final on this question as on any other. 4. Any one name must be complete on one side at least. That is, Buster Williams/William Schiopffe gets by (because the “S” at the beginning of the latter’s surname makes “Williams” complete) whereas J J Johnson/Sonny Berman does not. 5. A star name can only be used once in a chain, or we could have Terry Clarke/Clark Terry ad infinitum. 6. The judge (that’s me) can make up more rules as he thinks of them (this is to prevent any Smart Alec dodges as we go – Couw, please note!) 7. Extra marks will be given for style but they won’t count – it’s the greatest distance traveled that wins the day. There is no rule against anyone using parts of or the whole of other attempts provided they make a total string which has not been posted before. No prizes, just the acclamation of being the winner and any resulting adulation. I will post the highest scorer just below here as we go, if anyone can beat my effort that is! Quote

tooter Posted December 24, 2004 Author Report Posted December 24, 2004 so, can I use Wolf Hudalla - Alan Ralph? Definitely not! How dare you ask???? Not complete on either side. I knew I would have to watch you! Quote

tooter Posted December 24, 2004 Author Report Posted December 24, 2004 Joe Cinderella / Ella Fitzgerald / Gerald Wilson / Sonny Clark / Clark Terry / Terry Smith / Smith Dobson / Sonny Criss / Chris Connor / Honor Heffernan Would be an incredible ten but is only four (from Sonny Clark to Smith Dobson) because neither Wilson nor Sonny is complete on one side - same for Dobson and Sonny. Know what I mean? But well done indeed. Thanks for starting, Jim. Can anyone folllow that? Same length or more? BTW, Connor/Honor is near enough. But who is Honor Heffernan? I can't find her at AMG. Know what I mean? I'm confused. I took the final syllable (son) from Wilson and connected it to the first syllable in "Sonny". I was following your example (now deleted) where you went from (Stan) "Roderick" to "Eric". Seems like the same thing to me... But who is Honor Heffernan? I can't find her at AMG. She's an Irish vocalist. I have one CD by her, called "Chasing The Moon" (Cargo). I also have a videotape of a TV show she did with Louis Stewart in 1987 (a Dublin TV show called "The Session", which also featured Mundell Lowe). There used to be an article about her here (seems to be gone now, but I could have overlooked it): http://indigo.ie/~jazzirl/index.htm Quote

I was following your example (now deleted) where you went from (Stan) "Roderick" to "Eric". Seems like the same thing to me... But the whole name was "Eric" and matches with "erick" of "Roderick" so is complete on one side, the right, in my example. Now if you could think of someone whose whole first name... Hint! hint! And that leads on to... But maybe you need to be quick or someone could steal a march. Hint again! Makes it too easy if you can have partial names on both sides, you see? Here it is again for reference then - Stan Roderick/Eric Peter/Peter King/King Oliver/Oliver Nelson/Nelson Boyd/Boyd Raeburn. I must try to find something by Honor then. If she consorts with Louis Stewart she must be good. Quote
couw Posted December 24, 2004 Report Posted December 24, 2004 I still find that Rod'rick - Eric connection dubious. The stress is not on the same syllables and it doesn't even rhyme. I'm stuck, anyone know a player named Hudalla or Alla or La with first name? Quote

But Stan Roderick can be pronounced "Rod - er - rick" so "er- rick" is near enough to "Eric". Don't get stuck on one possibility though, there are plenty more. Not much of a party yet! Quote

Jim R Posted December 25, 2004 Report Posted December 25, 2004 Tooter, thanks for elaborating. I see what you mean now. I'll try again... Sonny Clark / Clark Terry / Terry Smith / Smith Dobson / Sun Ra / Robert Conti / Conte Candoli / Lee Wiley / Lee Morgan / Morgana King / King Oliver / Oliver Nelson / Nelson Boyd / Boyd Raeburn / Bern Nix / Nick Stabulas / Les McCann / Ann Richards / Richard Sutton ... got my fingers crossed on the Stabulas / Les McCann part... tooter Posted December 25, 2004 Author Report Posted December 25, 2004 Jim - incredible! Far more than I have ever managed even though I've been practicing here. "Ra/Robert" wouldn't do in England but as you're there it gets the white flag for sure. And I 've got to allow the "Stabulas/Les" because of your patience. But had you just had enough at nineteen - Richard Sutton? I can think of plenty of other Richards who would offer the chance to continue. Style - I like your Joe Cinderella/Ella Fitzgerald/Gerald... best. Will the thread revive? Please post any length, anybody else, even if you can't match Jim's. Quote
tooter Posted December 25, 2004 Author Report Posted December 25, 2004 Oh, yes - Nix / Nick Stabulas is good too. Quote

I wasn't even sure how "Stabulas" is pronounced (never heard it uttered by anyone), but I thought the last syllable might be close to "Les". Basically, I HAD had enough at 19!! As far as the Richards / Richard connection, I figured I had to come up with a Richard whose last name begins with "S", correct? "Sutton" was the only one I could come up with (thanks to a reference book), and I didn't have enough gas left in my tank to try to build on "Sutton". Anyway, can you tell that I enjoy games? Thanks, it was fun. Quote
tooter Posted December 26, 2004 Author Report Posted December 26, 2004 I can think of plenty of other Richards who would offer the chance to continue. No, of course. You need the "S" to go with "Richards". I was confused yesterday (and not a drop to drink). Quote

tooter Posted December 26, 2004 Author Report Posted December 26, 2004 Ubu - I am very glad to have another entry. Is nobody else in the puzzle mood, is it too difficult, or maybe too easy to be a challenge? Maybe people have just got better things to do. But there is still time to join in the "fun" Any entry welcomed, even those that break the rules. Quote

So can't I persude you to have a real go, Ubu? Very difficult to get anywhere near "Lord Jim" with his nineteen, although of course the rules allow you to pinch all or any of his and substitute other names at the end, or beginning, or anywhere in between. With perseverance you could be the leader. Quote
