If Cannonball-addict can do it… My game is called “Jazz Star Chains” and involves stringing together the names of jazz stars in the way given below, which is my best effort so far. Here are the rules:- 1. It is the way the name sounds that is the criterion – for instance, John Lewis/Louis Armstrong is acceptable, whereas Herbie Lewis/Louis Stewart is not as it is pronounced “Louie” Stewart. 2. The name must be that by which the star is usually known – i.e. Count Basie, not William or Bill. 3. The stars must be jazz players or singers and fairly well known. The decision of the judge (that’s me) is final on this question as on any other. 4. Any one name must be complete on one side at least. That is, Buster Williams/William Schiopffe gets by (because the “S” at the beginning of the latter’s surname makes “Williams” complete) whereas J J Johnson/Sonny Berman does not. 5. A star name can only be used once in a chain, or we could have Terry Clarke/Clark Terry ad infinitum. 6. The judge (that’s me) can make up more rules as he thinks of them (this is to prevent any Smart Alec dodges as we go – Couw, please note!) 7. Extra marks will be given for style but they won’t count – it’s the greatest distance traveled that wins the day. There is no rule against anyone using parts of or the whole of other attempts provided they make a total string which has not been posted before. No prizes, just the acclamation of being the winner and any resulting adulation. I will post the highest scorer just below here as we go, if anyone can beat my effort that is! Quote

I was following your example (now deleted) where you went from (Stan) "Roderick" to "Eric". Seems like the same thing to me... But who is Honor Heffernan? I can't find her at AMG. She's an Irish vocalist. I have one CD by her, called "Chasing The Moon" (Cargo). I also have a videotape of a TV show she did with Louis Stewart in 1987 (a Dublin TV show called "The Session", which also featured Mundell Lowe). But the whole name was "Eric" and matches with "erick" of "Roderick" so is complete on one side, the right, in my example. Now if you could think of someone whose whole first name... Hint! hint! And that leads on to... But maybe you need to be quick or someone could steal a march. Hint again! Makes it too easy if you can have partial names on both sides, you see? Here it is again for reference then - Stan Roderick/Eric Peter/Peter King/King Oliver/Oliver Nelson/Nelson Boyd/Boyd Raeburn. I must try to find something by Honor then. If she consorts with Louis Stewart she must be good. Quote

But Stan Roderick can be pronounced "Rod - er - rick" so "er- rick" is near enough to "Eric". Don't get stuck on one possibility though, there are plenty more. Not much of a party yet! Quote

I wasn't even sure how "Stabulas" is pronounced (never heard it uttered by anyone), but I thought the last syllable might be close to "Les". Basically, I HAD had enough at 19!! As far as the Richards / Richard connection, I figured I had to come up with a Richard whose last name begins with "S", correct? "Sutton" was the only one I could come up with (thanks to a reference book), and I didn't have enough gas left in my tank to try to build on "Sutton". Anyway, can you tell that I enjoy games? So can't I persude you to have a real go, Ubu? Very difficult to get anywhere near "Lord Jim" with his nineteen, although of course the rules allow you to pinch all or any of his and substitute other names at the end, or beginning, or anywhere in between.
