art pepper - village vanguard box

i just purchased the art pepper "complete village vanguard sessions" 9 cd box on ebay.

the listing listed everything in like new condition (box, booklet, and cd's).

unfortunately the box is in bad shape.

i emailed the seller, and he graciously offered to accept a return or i can have a 20% discount.

the total with shipping will be around $65 after the discount.

i know this is a good price, and obviously i will not have time to listen to all 9 cd's before i have to make a decision, so my question is - does anyone out there have this box, and if so, what is your opionion of it?

KSM, the music inside the box is what really counts and it's beautiful. Art Pepper was at his most intense and inspired during those nights.

Too bad if the box is in bad shape! The price is damn cool!

You might want to check out this AOTW Discussion. There's some in there about the Vanguard but more just a feeling for Pepper that might help you. I, myself, don't have it but would like to get it.

brownie is right.

the first disk is good, but it gets better IMO. So don't just audition the first disk to form a quick opinion whether you like the music. If you do, this box will surely be more than just a little.

OTOH, if you dig Pepper enough to buy this set, and if you can afford it, why not get a set w/a good box?

But if it's not that big a deal, or if funds are tight, yeah - keep it as is and just dig the music.
