EKE BBB Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 Who said all jazz songs were either "I got rhythm" or the blues? Let´s take the first one. Name songs (credited to songwriters different from Gershwin) based on "I got rhythm". I´ll start with a bunch: Cotton tail (Duke Ellington) Lester leaps in (Lester Young) Shag (Sidney Bechet) Moose the mooche (Charlie Parker) Quote
BeBop Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 If that Blue Note Board ever reopens with any history, perhaps my list of 150 or so Rhythm-based songs will resurface. Many good ones. Like the Flintstones Theme. Quote

Sundog Posted June 4, 2003 Report Posted June 4, 2003 Incidentally, this phenomenon of basing a song on the chord changes of another is called "contrafact" A few other songs fairly widely used as contrafacts are, What Is This Thing Called Love, How High The Moon, Honeysuckle Rose, and Tiger Rag. Getting back to the point of the original post... Miles Davis' "Serpents Tooth" Is a good contrafact based on I Got Rhythm. Quote
