LAL Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 (edited) Just placed my first order with Dusty Grooves. 3 titles - one each of Pres, Sonny Criss and Lucky Thompson. The cost of shipping is >50% of the price of the CD. But, still a very good deal overall. Edited December 20, 2004 by LAL Quote

Quincy Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 I was supposed to be taking a break from ordering. But seeing as I already had a text file full of recommendations about this series from a past thread, I had to pick up a few. Don Byas - En Ce Temps-la Don Byas - Laura Kenny Clarke - Plays Andre Hodeir Sonny Criss - Mr. Blues Pour Flirter Andre Hodeir - Jazz & Jazz Bobby Jaspar - Modern Jazz au Club Saint Germain Django Reinhardt - Nuits De St. Germain Pres Lucky Thompon - Modern Jazz Group Jazz Et Cinema Vol. 1 Twice before I have ordered the Django listed above only to have it cancelled, but this time it's shipping! I only own half a dozen as I've had a hard time finding them in stock and at a nice price. The ones I have include the Blakey, Getz, Wilen's Jazz Sur Seine, Lester Young and 2 other Django's. It was tough not order more but I've been a bit out of control of late. But I'm going to try not to buy anything until next year. Ugh, that's 12 days, I'm already starting to feel itchy. Quote
brownie Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 One Jazz in Paris CD that is always overlooked is volume 54 'Clarinettes a Saint-Germain-des-Pres'. It features the playing of Hubert Rostaing (with Martial Solal on piano) and Maurice Meunier (with Raymond Fol or Rene urtreger). Two very underrated clarinettists who both were good enough to play with Django Reinhardt in the post-1940 Quintette du Hot Club de France. Worth looking for! Quote
Late Posted December 20, 2004 Author Report Posted December 20, 2004 kh1958 — minus the Byrds and Jazz et Cinema 2, that was my order from Dusty Groove about two years ago ... but not for those prices! The Lucky Thompson Modern Jazz Group might just be my very favorite of the bunch. (Of course, the Byas discs always leave me .) Guy, that Clarinettes a Saint-Germain-des-Pres is a good one. I haven't spun it in quite some time, though. Time to get it out again. I guess tomorrow will be Paris in Oregon. Quote
jazzbo Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 I ordered these. I have the Jaspar on an earlier Emarcy cd, and wanted to hear the JIP. I think that after these I have all the titles except maybe the fourth Cinema one and the Grapellis and Oscar Petersons. . . which I don't feel driven to pick up. . . . Late Posted December 20, 2004 Author Report Posted December 20, 2004 I almost plunked for the Gillespies. Listened to the sound samples and liked much ... but my guilty conscience prevented me, especially because — when I order those Free America discs ... ka-ching! Quote
ghost of miles Posted December 21, 2004 Report Posted December 21, 2004 AAAARRGHHHH!!!!! BASTARDS!!!!! You said it, pal... there goes my holiday-overtime check. Quote
ghost of miles Posted December 21, 2004 Report Posted December 21, 2004 La Dernier Message de Lester Young This is the same as the last session on the Verve box, correct? Quote
kh1958 Posted December 21, 2004 Report Posted December 21, 2004 Has anyone heard the Max Roach or the Chet Baker? Quote
jazzbo Posted December 21, 2004 Report Posted December 21, 2004 Yes. Both the Bakers in the series are excellent. The Roach isn't my favorite from that band, but for the price is a bargain! Quote
ghost of miles Posted December 22, 2004 Report Posted December 22, 2004 Wow... I placed two orders, both of 'em fairly hefty, and looks like every title I ordered has been filled, save for the Byas BEBOP (sold out, but I just found it elsewhere for a good price). DG must've had a bevy of them. Quote
mgraham333 Posted December 22, 2004 Report Posted December 22, 2004 I just received: Bill Coleman: From boogie to funk Lester Young: Le dernier message de Lester Young Donald Byrd Quintet: Parisian thoroughfare Donald Byrd: Byrd in Paris Art Blakey: 1958 Paris Olympia I didn't stray too far from what I know. But this small taste of the series may change that. I hope the price...and their stock holds until after the holidays. Quote

couw Posted December 22, 2004 Report Posted December 22, 2004 if nothing else, that Raymond Fol - Quatre Saisons disk is a darn funny one. I like it. Much better than the same old stale old. Quote
RDK Posted December 22, 2004 Report Posted December 22, 2004 I like it. Much better than the same old stale old. Yep. I love a sale like this so that i can "expand my horizons." There are a few artists here whom I've never heard before... Quote
couw Posted December 22, 2004 Report Posted December 22, 2004 expand your horizons and order the Hodeir Jazz et Jazz disk. Much cool stuff on that disk. Jazz of wide open horizons indeed. Then again, you don't really want to trust me and my taste. :rsly: Quote
Quincy Posted December 22, 2004 Report Posted December 22, 2004 (edited) Sheeesh, I have no willpower. After seeing news about some of the Blue Note cutouts, I added just a wafer thin portion of Jazz in Paris selections to my order. This is 2 days after placing an order of just Jazz in Paris selections. I added Brownie's suggested overlooked gem - Clarinettes A Saint Germain Des Pres, and the Lucky Thompson With Dave Pochonet. Oh my, and one more, Bernard Peiffer's La Vie En Rose. OK, that's it for the year! Edited December 22, 2004 by Quincy Quote

Seriously, the Hodeir was in my cart, but it didn't make the cut. Maybe next time... Quote
garthsj Posted December 23, 2004 Report Posted December 23, 2004 if nothing else, that Raymond Fol - Quatre Saisons disk is a darn funny one. I like it. Much better than the same old stale old. I ordered this, but I think that I used to have this album on a Phillips LP ... and the featured artist was Johnny Griffin ... is this the same one? Quote
ejp626 Posted December 23, 2004 Report Posted December 23, 2004 I ordered this, but I think that I used to have this album on a Phillips LP ... and the featured artist was Johnny Griffin ... is this the same one? Yes, this is a re-issue of Philips 70306. Johnny Griffin is on the album. Not sure if he really is the featured artist or that was just the marketing of the time. Other notable musicians are Roger Guerin on trumpet, Raymond Guy on flute, Jimmy Woode on double bass and Art Taylor on drums. (I skipped about 15 other names.) Quote
RDK Posted December 23, 2004 Report Posted December 23, 2004 Darn, just heard that the Byas and Peiffer are sold out and won't be shipping. Anyone know if DG will be getting any more of these in (I know they say they will, but...). Double darn, reading more of this thread has me already considering a second order! Quote

Brad Posted December 30, 2004 Report Posted December 30, 2004 I've received my order and the Fol is a bit unusual but quite enjoyable. I am also listening to Guy Lafitte's Blue and Sentimental. He's very much a Hawk disciple but it's a great album nonetheless. Of note is Geo Daly on vibes. He's very good. Never heard him before. Quote
