Bright Moments Posted December 17, 2004 Report Posted December 17, 2004 i seem to be accumulating a number of unfileable cd's, meaning those by an ensemble where it would be unfair to pick one as "leader" for filing purposes. i stick these in the back of the rack so i don't lose them! jazz at massey hall comes to mind as a prime example. another one, which is excellent, is by a group called "the five" - here's yanow's review: Review by Scott Yanow This excellent album (a reissue LP of music deserving to be reissued on CD) is really led by Shorty Rogers, who provided the dozen arrangements and five originals, although he does not play trumpet on the date. Featuring a quintet of fine West Coast players (including pianist Pete Jolly at the beginning of his career), Rogers' charts really set the mood for the set of cool jazz. Trumpeter Conte Candoli and tenor saxophonist Bill Perkins (heard at his coolest, tone-wise) take plenty of fine solos, while bassist Buddy Clark and drummer Mel Lewis are lightly swinging in support. This is a near-classic that has somehow remained obscure through the years, perhaps due to the group's name. yanow and i agree on this one! what are some of your favorite "unfileables"? Quote
BFrank Posted December 17, 2004 Report Posted December 17, 2004 Currently listening to one of those: "Blues for Coltrane" - McCoy Tyner, Pharaoh Sanders, David Murray, Cecil McBee & Roy Haynes. I usually file it under "Coltrane". I don't know why ... Quote
JSngry Posted December 17, 2004 Report Posted December 17, 2004 I keep a section for "various". It includes compilations and all-star dates such as these mentioned, those where the group has no name. My quandry is this - do I file "various" under "V" or not? Quote
BFrank Posted December 17, 2004 Report Posted December 17, 2004 Good idea. I would just stick "various" at the end of the collection. After all, that's not the name of the artist(s). Quote
JSngry Posted December 17, 2004 Report Posted December 17, 2004 Still, "various" DOES begin with "V"... Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted December 17, 2004 Report Posted December 17, 2004 (edited) My bigger problem, filing-wise, is where to put Karen Mantler's CD's??? They're not exactly jazz (though they're absolutely not exactly not jazz either). I could file them with my pop/rock/alternative stuff -- but they stick out like a sore thumb there too. What to do??? Edit: Right now they're at the end of my pop/rock/alternative CD's, after all the various artists CD's, and soundtracks. I've got one other CD in this "I don't know where to file it" section... Praxis - "Transmutation (Mutatis Mutandis)". Is it Rock?? Is it Funk?? Is it Metal?? Is it Jazz?? Problem is it's all of those things, and more!!! Edited December 17, 2004 by Rooster_Ties Quote
John L Posted December 17, 2004 Report Posted December 17, 2004 Still, "various" DOES begin with "V"... Oh, crap. I never thought about that before. Now what am I going to do?????? Quote
BFrank Posted December 17, 2004 Report Posted December 17, 2004 Still, "various" DOES begin with "V"... But, but, but, but .... does the CD have the name "various" anywhere on it? Meanwhile: I'm having trouble figuring out where to put Viktor Kraus' album. It's not jazz or folk or country or rock......it's instrumental music. I don't have a category for that. Quote
EKE BBB Posted December 17, 2004 Report Posted December 17, 2004 Still, "various" DOES begin with "V"... Yep, but I don´t put them under "Va" (from "various") but under "VV" (from "VVAA", "various artists") Quote
Phil Meloy Posted December 17, 2004 Report Posted December 17, 2004 Duke Ellington & Ella Fitzgerald Quote
EKE BBB Posted December 17, 2004 Report Posted December 17, 2004 Duke Ellington & Ella Fitzgerald I usually file those "All-Star" reunions under the name of the musician with more discs in my collection. In your example, Ellington wins 150-30, more or less... Quote

kh1958 Posted December 17, 2004 Report Posted December 17, 2004 jazz at massey hall comes to mind as a prime example. Jazz at Massey Hall goes under Mingus, since he recorded it, played on it, and issued it on his own label. Quote
RDK Posted December 17, 2004 Report Posted December 17, 2004 I'm envious that you guys actually file stuff! Quote
skeith Posted December 17, 2004 Report Posted December 17, 2004 Ray Charles - Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music: Do you file it with your other Ray Cds in your R&B stuff or put it with your C&W cds right next to your Patsy Cline stuff????????????? Quote
Adam Posted December 17, 2004 Report Posted December 17, 2004 I don't have my R&B and country separate. So all the Ray Charles can go together. Pop, rock, soul, world, and country all live together. Jazz is another section. Classical a third. Quote
Bright Moments Posted December 20, 2004 Author Report Posted December 20, 2004 where to file this puppy? Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 Dude, In the Circular file! Sorry, couldn't resist. I have mine with the corea, but it would make as much sense with the Braxton or under "Circle" as a collective. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 I stick the Quintet disc with Bird, which for some reason goes under 'P'. Probably because he squeaks or something... I try to avoid any and all various CDs for this vary...uh, I mean very reason! The one that kills me is the one I couldn't avoid, the Black Orpheus soundtrack. So I came up with a new rule that soundtrack discs go after Z.... Quote

Chuck Nessa Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 In the database I use I file various artists under Z , then by label alphabetically. Quote
AfricaBrass Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 I stick the Quintet disc with Bird, which for some reason goes under 'P'. Probably because he squeaks or something... Same here. I've been ripping my cd collection to mp3 and here's one that's got me. 3 in Jazz (RCA) I usually just keep this after Z on the shelves, but since I'm creating mp3s, I've had to go through the tracks for each artist and create separate ep's for them. Quincy Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 An example that really isn't that difficult, but I've fun with in the past involves all of the Mulligan parings. For awhile when I owned no Mulligan I filed Monk Meets Mulligan under Mulligan, just so I'd have something there. Now it's back in the Monk section. The Konitz with Mulligan has always been in the K section, but I do file the Mulligan Meets Hodges release with Mulligan, since Gerry is meeting Johnny, not the other way around. I mainly brought up the above in that I always keep in mind the possibility that Mulligan might accidentally, or on purpose, be filed with anyone he ever met in his life. A bit of wine and anything can happen! Assorted Konitz & Marsh pairings also seem obvious enough, and as they are almost neighbors on the shelf it isn't worrisome. Movie soundtracks I tend to file under whoever I deem to be the star of the soundtrack. All of my current discs are obvious (such as Ascenseur pour lechafaud), but I do have the Jazz In Paris "Jazz Et Cinema Vol. 1" coming in the mail which may necessitate a "various" filing at the end of the shelf. Or maybe it will go with Wilen. As far as the eternal "is it jazz" question, for whatever reason I stuck my Sinatra in the "all other music that isn't jazz" section, so he's neighbors with Sly rather than hanging amongst the preponderance of RVG spines in Shorter, Silver & Smith land. File under great moments in stupidity, but I discovered last week that I had filed Braxton's For Alto between Air & Fred Anderson. I might need a breathalyzer near my shelves to see if I'm fit for filing duties, although sometimes this sort of thing happens when completely sober too. Edited December 20, 2004 by Quincy Quote
Brad Posted December 21, 2004 Report Posted December 21, 2004 Just imagine if you had the cd, "the Jones Boys", where Leonard Feather brought together Jimmy Jones, Eddie Jones, Quincy Jones, Thad Jones, Jo Jones and Reginald Jones. Under which Jones would you file that sucker? Quote
