Looks interesting enough for the price, but the real thing would still be another huge JATP package with the 50s recordings... if they'd omit the commonly available "At the Opera House" albums and other commonly available stuff (and the material released later on on Pablo, of course), it should be doable... but I guess there's no one left at Universal that would actually care for such a box these days...

The liner notes give the date as November 2, 1949, but the actual date (as asserted by a poster on the old BNBB) was February 11, 1949 (2/11/49 rather than 11/2/49, in American parlance).

No, I thought there was one release with a date given that must be some years off... could it still be the London recording? Coleman Hawkins died in May 1969 and I read somewhere that his final recording stem from 1966!

Ah yes, mystery solved... the London set is from November 26, 1966, it seems.

So says the (german) book on Hawkins by Teddy Doering (one of these Oreos "Collection Jazz" books subtitled "Sein Leben - Seine Musik - Seine Schallplatten", in english: "his life - his music - his records"), p. 221:

Die CD-Ausgabe dieses Konzertmitschnitts gibt als Aufnahmedatum den März 1969 an, und dementsprechend lautet der Titel "In London 1969". Dies kann unmöglich stimmen. Im März 1969 wäre Hawkins gesundheitlich nicht zu einer JATP-Tournee durch Europa in der Lage gewesen, ganz zu schweigen davon, so gut spielen zu können. Auf der zuerst erschienenen Doppel-LP waren die Angaben noch richtig.

My own translation:

"This concert recording's CD release gives March 1969 as date of recodring, hence the title of the CD is "In London 1969", which can't be correct by any means. In March 1969, Hawkins' health wasn't strong enough to allow him to go on a JATP tour through yurp, and even less strong enough to play so well. The original double LP came with correct information."

So I might not have read it on the webs anywhere but right there in that book...

But thanks mjzee anyway, wasn't aware of the US/euro date confusion with the 1949 set!

When the first JATP disc hit Denmark, the music was immediately designated as an orgy. In Bengt Haandstad's little record shop, the sounds of JATP flowed as freely and consistently as the Tuborg beer he guzzled all day. Les Paul and Nat Cole playing tag, Billie surrounded by great players, Illinois Jacquet getting down, real low. Then, too, we were not used to hearing much past 3 minutes, so that was also great. How could one not love these recordings? I did then and I still do.

Your post bring back old memories, Bent Håndstad in the back of Diplom Radio Store on Vesterbrogade in Copenhagen where we listened, drank and just carried on. I have spend hours and hours there. I have also attented 4-5 JATP concerts in the 50's here in Copenhagen, the only time I have seen Lester Young live. I was later in my life at a private party at my friends (Anders Stefansen whom you know) house where Norman G. also was a guest,

he was nice, but I would say a little arrogant.

I have just read your blog about "Knald" and the first Storyville Club in Copenhagen, down at the Longshoremens Cantine by The Harbor, I also came there as a teenager, Oh Jeppe Esper Larsen and The Ramblers and Københavns (Copenhagens) Fodvarmere (Feetwarmers) with two banjo players (one was a woman), those were they days when we were young and believed. I was an apprentice at that time and made 156 kroner a month, and once did I buy "Porter" (Stout beer) for 5 people, I was so excited, I was broke for the rest of the month. I guess you never come to Denmark anymore, we are getting old both of us, but if you do let me know, I would love to have a drink or two with you.

Quick question. Where does one find the original Illinois Jacquet "Flying Home" that made a star of him and "invented" the honking sax? I thought it was JATP First Concert 1944, but it's not on that CD. Also not on the Verve Best of Illinois Jacquet, and not in the Mosaic Lionel Hampton.

It was the Lionel Hampton Orchestra performance of 1942.

on a sidenote, why does Cannonball not turn up on the set with his rhythm section (on Vol. 2, Feldman/Jones/Hayes, with Dizzy, J.J. and Getz)? Kind of weird, no? Would he have asked for too much money to do more than just the two first numbers? Or was he at odds with Granz?

Cannonball was under contract with Riverside at the time - that Granz recorded him is evident from the two Pablo releases from 1960 with the group:

Would it really be so difficult for Verve to do a follow-up compilation of the JATP material after 1949? I realize that a number of the PD companies are stepping into the breach, so to speak, but they left a lot to be desired (rarely any liner notes, duplication between companies, etc.). Just seems like a missed opportunity to be sure.

I guess it would be another nightmarish job with regards to discographical research, at least ... and profit would be small as some of those nice Spanish outfits would be fast throwing out a cheap duplicate release that stupid chain stores would offer instead of the originals (happens all the time here, you get all the crappy stuff but less and less of the remaining good stuff).

But obviously I'd love it!

I'd like that, too. This arrived this morning:

JATP on Membran. No sleeve notes whatever! And trying to go through the Lord discography is terrible. There's a 1950 session I haven't yet identified - but it might not be 1950, because another session has been assigned to the wrong year (the year is all the date you get in this box).

Anyway, the music, so far - I'm playing disc 5, which has a lot of Billie Holiday and the 'Perdido'/'Mordido' session (but not 'Endido') - is really nice.

I'm fond of a later one, JATP in Europe. It's got a great version of "All The Things You Are, " with Getz, Byas, and Hawk. Benny Carter too? It's been a while

I haven't listened to enough of these, but two of my favourites are JATP 1946 and 1949, which both feature Bird and Lester Young.

I remember I bought those brown or yellow 2 LP sets from Verve, the 1946 with Bird on it, and a 1944 with a very hot solo by Illinois Jaquet. 

I think I bought it because there was a club in Vienna (Jazz Freddy) and in the small hours Mr. Freddy the great Jazz DJ  usually would spin those JATP´s and people danced to it and shouted and yelled. And I also liked it, but it seems it was the atmosphere, the beer consumation. Anyway, great and wild solos. JATP and Lionel Hampton Big Bands, that was what he would spin in the small hours. 

But at home, where I usually listen to music much more to study how a group works together, how the drummer fits to the horns etc.... or just closing the eyes and enjoying a great solo or a beautiful theme, I think nowadays JAPT with it´s conservative drumming and somehow "stiff and very straight swing" would be of lesser interest for me....
