neveronfriday Posted December 12, 2004 Report Posted December 12, 2004 Title says it all. I got some spankin' new Verve CDs (stupid ****ing Verve box sets), and some CDs have some glue on the surface which apparently oozed out of the "protective" sleeve. It's not much, my main CD player doesn't mind, but I want to remove the stuff because it might damage the CDs along the way. What's the best way of getting the stuff off? I need some sort of liquid, whatever. Cheers! Quote
John B Posted December 12, 2004 Report Posted December 12, 2004 I had this problem with a few Miles Davis discs from one of the box sets. The glue was significant enough to affect play. Nothing I tried was able to remove the glue without damaging the cd, so I called Sony customer service, reported the problem, and theys ent me two replacement discs. Why not try calling Verve and have them replace the discs rather than take the chance of damaging them? Quote
neveronfriday Posted December 12, 2004 Author Report Posted December 12, 2004 I bought mine second-hand, so that's not an option (the set that is especially bad has been out of print for a while). Again, my CD player has no problems with the CDs (and I'm going to try to burn some copies just now), but ... Cheers! Quote
medjuck Posted December 12, 2004 Report Posted December 12, 2004 I tried rubbing hard with a wet cloth and got rid of the glue but scratched the disc! (This was a disc from the new Miles 7 Steps set.) However I was able to fix it using one of those disc repar kits-- "Skip Doctor" from Digitial Innovations. I've used this on 4 or 5 discs and so far it's always worked. Quote
Dr. Rat Posted December 12, 2004 Report Posted December 12, 2004 You might try lighter fluid. There are risks all roud, I suppose: try it on a disc you don't like first to make sure it doesn't do immediate damage--after glue is off a thorough rinse. --eric Quote
couw Posted December 12, 2004 Report Posted December 12, 2004 WD40. I'm not kidding. isn't that a Tractor? bit radical isn't it? Quote
mikeweil Posted December 12, 2004 Report Posted December 12, 2004 CDs are made from polycarbonate - there must be some website or chemical or technical encyclopedia telling what solvent affect the polycarbonate, and which do not. I would choose one of the latter group. I would also try the solvent on a disc already ruined - a burned disc that doesn't play or one of those blank decoration discs the shops use or whatever. It is important to never rub in a circular manner, always from center to edge. Quote
