Joe Posted December 18, 2004 Report Posted December 18, 2004 2. Terry Allen "Lubbock (On Everything)" A great record not many people know about. Also good for Tejas drivin'... Mike Nesmith's First National Band stuff John Carter, FIELDS Ry Cooder's BOOMER'S STORY Dan Hicks And His Hot Licks, WHERE'S THE MONEY Transona 5, MELATONIN BULLET and THREE-WAY GLIDER Quote
.:.impossible Posted December 18, 2004 Report Posted December 18, 2004 It was released January, and I'm still saying it is my favorite release of 2004. It blended everything I was listening to at the time into one cohesive music. These guys just keep getting better, in my opinion. Quote
Big Al Posted December 19, 2004 Report Posted December 19, 2004 Mike Nesmith's First National Band stuff Aww HELL YEAH!!!! Makes you forget he was ever a Monkee, and some of the finest country-rock EVER issued! Quote
GregK Posted December 19, 2004 Report Posted December 19, 2004 Q2: Have ya'll heard Neil on Austin City Limits from like '83 or '84? Very hot in country mode, it totally validates that particular exercise in a way the studio record doesn't. yes, I have them doing down by the river and amber jean and that telephone song, and grey riders from another show-you're right, so much better than anything legitimately released. neil was really on fire in the 80s, at least live. everything i've heard live in the 80s is very good. listen to crazy horse from 84 doing touch the night, or from 87 doing mideast vacation-or his horns & blues band doing ordinary people from 88 Quote
Big Al Posted December 19, 2004 Report Posted December 19, 2004 Ya'll are... 100% correct! I forgot about that... I had a cassette, since lost, that inc. all the great Nesmith Monkees songs FWIW, I always considered Headquarters to be more of a Nesmith solo project than an actual Monkees album. "What Am I Doing Hangin' 'Round" is the best song never done by the Byrds. Prison is more of the slicked spacey stuff. But if you can find Elephant Parts on DVD, that is some of the funniest shit EVER!!! Especially the part about Elvis Drugs (Love Me Tenderizers, All Shook Uppers, and Blue Suede 'Ludes). But the REAL star of those 1st National Band records was Red Rhodes and his pedal steel. Quote
Big Al Posted December 19, 2004 Report Posted December 19, 2004 Forgot to mention, this was also the year I finally got into James Brown, but oddly enough, it's his post-Bootsy 70's work that has been spinning my groove all this time!!! PICK UP ON THIS!!!! Quote
Joe Posted December 19, 2004 Report Posted December 19, 2004 THE PRISON I have the faintest of memories of, and at that mostly of the packaging / libretto. All I know is I also would never be without a copy of AND THE HITS JUST KEEP ON COMIN' and PRETTY MUCH YOUR STANDARD RANCH STASH. Especially the former. Quote
