Jazzmoose Posted December 8, 2004 Report Posted December 8, 2004 That Jan Garbarek has no right to take that spot. Personally, I like what I've heard of the disc. As for 'right', that doesn't make a lot of sense; he didn't add his own name to the list, you know... Quote
SGUD missile Posted December 9, 2004 Report Posted December 9, 2004 And look at it this way, Phil... Even if you don't win, you don't lose! There is always the non-winner nomination pendant! (the shine has given way to a charming patina) Do they expect us to wear these things???? Gee Chris: I didnt realize I'd get a runner-up " Miss Congealing-ality " medal! I guess I can hang it around the neck of my iMac .. (now working on CD#2 with renewed vigor ..) Quote
SGUD missile Posted December 9, 2004 Report Posted December 9, 2004 All kidding aside, Phil, I'll be rooting for you. And remember, an award tucked away does your career no good. Whether you win or not, you have to capitalize on it while it's fresh. I think I mention how a friend of mine (Geoffrey Holder) took his Tony award straight to a PR person and landed several jobs as a result of the publicity, one of which paid the PR person's fee. The rest of the Tony-winning cast (we're talking WIZ here) had a good old time celebrating, but there was no boost to their career. Funny you should mention that .. This very AM,I got a call from a local publicist here who used to work for Arif Mardin for 15 or so years ( so she says ) I'll be tickled pink if I just get a couple nice arranging /recording gigs outta all this in the coming year! Jim Alfredson Posted December 9, 2004 Report Posted December 9, 2004 Wow, Phil. That would be great! Quote
neveronfriday Posted December 9, 2004 Report Posted December 9, 2004 Congratulations! And, BTW, how many nominees/winners do we actually have on this board? Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted December 9, 2004 Report Posted December 9, 2004 We won a "Jammy" award for Best Local Jazz Record 2003. Is that close? Quote
sheldonm Posted December 9, 2004 Report Posted December 9, 2004 We won a "Jammy" award for Best Local Jazz Record 2003. Is that close? ....close enough! Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted December 10, 2004 Report Posted December 10, 2004 Congratulations! And, BTW, how many nominees/winners do we actually have on this board? Couple of times I "supposedly" missed the last cut for nomination. Guess I've always been "just outside". Fine with me, without any "dis" for the real winners. GREAT for them. CA busted his back on the Bessie reissues. I also have tons of respect for Phil's achievement. If I'd ever won a grammy, I'd have been a real asshole at the mike. Quote
Joe G Posted December 10, 2004 Report Posted December 10, 2004 As if you would've gotten any mike time in your catagory... Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted December 10, 2004 Report Posted December 10, 2004 As if you would've gotten any mike time in your catagory... It was VERY different in the early '70s. I would have had "mike time". Quote
Joe G Posted December 10, 2004 Report Posted December 10, 2004 In that case, I wish you had won! Quote
Peter Johnson Posted December 29, 2004 Report Posted December 29, 2004 As predicted, I got a (late) Christmas present of Phil's Convergence Zone CD last night. Wowwwwweeee! This is a killer record. The arrangements are tight and the playing is very very good. It's very spontaneous and energetic. Any of you who are fans of large band recordings must pick it up. Good luck with the grammy nomination, Phil--you deserve it! Get it here. It's twelve bucks--what are you waiting for?!!! Quote

B-) Hey guys! thanks for all the kind words (and helpin' me clean out my CD pile in the garage) As far as the "Carmina Burana" reference goes, if so, it must of been subconscious ..at what point in the chart didyou detect this? ( Gee ..and all this time, I though I was ripping off some Gil Evans brass voicings and serving them up with some stolen Claus Ogerman string licks! ) Quote
Larry Kart Posted February 15, 2005 Report Posted February 15, 2005 Got a copy today, have listened to the first three tracks and am very impressed. Per the discussion on another thread of how to write behind soloists, listen to how Phil's figures inspire Pete Christlieb. Fine recording job too. Quote
