Ed S Posted June 1, 2003 Report Posted June 1, 2003 I'm confused Just to clarify, are we looking at any one particular date in the years that you have listed? Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted June 1, 2003 Author Report Posted June 1, 2003 If you can find a way of selecting 4th July, 1776 as opposed to 3rd July 1776 from the ten choices on offer please be my guest! Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted June 1, 2003 Report Posted June 1, 2003 Voted for 1492. Started the ball rolling on the New World. Second choice would have been 1848: year of revolutions. Quote
JSngry Posted June 1, 2003 Report Posted June 1, 2003 I'm a music geek, so I went with the one that has an overture... Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted June 1, 2003 Author Report Posted June 1, 2003 Ah, JSngry, that one holds a special place in the hearts of us Brits for other reasons! Quote
Guest Chaney Posted June 1, 2003 Report Posted June 1, 2003 Not really a "favorite" date but I chose 1901 - the year in which the Pan-American Exposition was held in Buffalo a/k/a The City of Light. Number of visitors? 8,000,000. Unfortunately, also the event at which President William McKinley was assassinated. Good-bye-good bye, all. It's God's way. His will, not ours, be done. Nearer my God to Thee, nearer to Thee. —[McKinley's reported last words] From that date, this once great City has slowly declined and has now taken its place amongst the cities of the "rust belt". wesbed Posted June 1, 2003 Report Posted June 1, 2003 1942. The year closest to the beginning of bebop. B) Quote
Ed S Posted June 1, 2003 Report Posted June 1, 2003 Alas, my favorite date is not even on the list. Quote
tonym Posted June 1, 2003 Report Posted June 1, 2003 Well as i'm too sincere to be ironic i picked 1942. Oh.. what a date that was, she had long black wavy hair and her legs didn't have that Bisto smell either. We danced all night underneath those arches. Many other dates since then, but nowadays girls are far too forward. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted June 1, 2003 Author Report Posted June 1, 2003 Strange. I favour 1649 for much the same reason, tonym. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted June 1, 2003 Report Posted June 1, 2003 Oh, man - my favorite date was this hot blond school-teacher I met through the 'personals' ads about 8 years ago, and... Oh, wait!! - that's not the kind of date you're asking about, is it... Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted June 1, 2003 Author Report Posted June 1, 2003 Disqualified! ("Read the rubric, boy, read the rubric.") Quote
Alexander Posted June 1, 2003 Report Posted June 1, 2003 I chose 1848, the year of revolutions. Old Karl Marx himself wrote some excellent articles that year... It also happens to be one my favorite periods in American history. Herman Melville was hard at work on "Moby Dick" (to be published in 1850) during that year. The 1840s and 50s were interesting from a social perspective too. The Civil War would soon break out, changing a great many things about 19th century America (for good and for ill). Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted June 1, 2003 Report Posted June 1, 2003 I have to go with 1942 since that's the year my spectacular wife was conceived. If not for her, I would not exist. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted June 2, 2003 Author Report Posted June 2, 2003 I chose 1848, the year of revolutions. Ah, but 1649 was also a year of revolution. Or was it counter-revolution? Perhaps 1647 would have been a better choice. Quote
shawn·m Posted June 2, 2003 Report Posted June 2, 2003 (edited) There are just too many good dates to choose from. Hey, where’d that dog come from? Edited June 2, 2003 by kartoffel·hadi blues Quote
Son-of-a-Weizen Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 Why no 1618 ? You got somethin' against good 'ol fashioned defenestration???? Quote
