cannonball-addict Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 Self-explanatory. Only deceased guys/gals. Sorry Other. Quote
Late Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 Geez, I don't even know Charlie Fowlkes. Recommended recordings? Draw between Jeru and Serge. Quote
doubleM Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 I went with Pepper. I think that there are still a couple of poll ideas that haven't been used...what'cha waiting for? B-) Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 Pepper was awesome. Quote
cannonball-addict Posted November 29, 2004 Author Report Posted November 29, 2004 Pepper was awesome. His solos on Donald Byrd's Live at the Half Note kill. Quote
brownie Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 Serge Chaloff! His 'Body and Soul' is right up there next to Bean's... Quote
cannonball-addict Posted November 29, 2004 Author Report Posted November 29, 2004 Geez, I don't even know Charlie Fowlkes. Recommended recordings? Draw between Jeru and Serge. He played with Basie's band for a while. I don't know if he released any under his own name. Quote
wolff Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 My vote easily goes to Mulligan. Chaloff gets a half vote due to Blue Serge. Adams gets a half vote for the few BN albums I've heard him on. I wish he had been on 5 or 10 more Blue Notes. I've heard the others, but not enough to pass judgement. Quote
EKE BBB Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 I have to go with Harry Carney! Quote
EKE BBB Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 Another top-notch baritone player, not mentioned, is Ernie Caceres. Quote
couw Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 Ronnie who? The prize for coolest name goes to Wolf Hudalla Quote
bary01 Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 I vote for Nick Brignola , and I recommand 2 LP with HOT baritonist "Burn Brigade " , a great baritone chase with Cecyl Payne , Nick Brignola and Ronnie Cuber and Baritone Madness , with Pepper Adams and Nick Brignola ( with an Outstanding Donna Lee version ) Quote
king ubu Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 Charlie Fowlkes hardly soloed with Basie, though he can be heard on at least one of the jams in the Buck Clayton Mosaic. *********** Helmut Brandt (Berlin 1931 - Stuttgart 2001) Willi Sanner (who can be heard on Hans Koller's fine CD "Koller Plays Kova" [rec. mid Fifties]) was another fine German (or Austrian? I guess Austrian) baritone player. Then there was Lars Gullin, of course! For me, it's very hard to choose a favourite. Mulligan is terrific, so is Bob Gordon, so is Chaloff, so is Carney... so is Pepper Adams, and so are several living guys. Maybe I'd choose Carney, if I was forced to choose. ubu Quote
White Lightning Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 I voted for Brignola, because I thought Pepper will win by a landslide Another vote for the inclusion of Lars Gullin on this poll! Quote
DTMX Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 Cecil Payne is dead? I voted for Sahib Shihab. Any guy that plays baritone, alto, and flute (three instruments I own) is alright by me. Second choice was Brignola. I've got enough Pepper and Mulligan CDs to fill a briefcase and was listening to Encounter! when I ran across this thread. Quote
White Lightning Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 Cecil Payne is dead? NO! Quote
cannonball-addict Posted November 29, 2004 Author Report Posted November 29, 2004 Cecil Payne is dead? NO! He's not? Quote
DTMX Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 Cecil Payne is dead? NO! He's not? His agent might be after Cecil reads this thread. Quote
brownie Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 Cecil Payne is alive and well. And playing: http://www.gothamjazz.com/events/13984/ Quote
Brad Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 It's good to see he's playing because I'd heard that not long ago, he was in bad financial straits. Quote
Dave James Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 I'm the "Other" vote. Lars Gullin. Up over and out. Quote
JohnS Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 It's got to be Mulligan, but Melle, Chaloff and Brignola all do it for me. Quote
jazzydaddy Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 I voted for Nick. Do you see the resemblance?? Seriously, while I love Pepper Adams' playing as well all you need to do if you have any doubts between the two of them is to listen to "Baritone Madness" on Bee Hive. IMO Nick ran through Pepper like a chainsaw!! Don Quote
Late Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 Ronnie who? Oh, you know, that guy — whatsit ... Ronnie Ross. No, couldn't be right. Quote
BruceH Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 I have to go with Harry Carney! Good man! Quote
