Hi Noj - one minor correction, that's stuff from Blue Note and Capitol, no Pacific Jazz stuff for those guys.

Regardless - GET IT, GET IT, GET IT! Full of truly top drawer bop, stuff that should be in EVERYONE'S collection in one form or another. $10 is a great price too. Sound on this set is perfectly acceptable, if not quite up to the Japanese RVGs of the FABULOUS FATS NAVARRO albums.

I've added it to the order. Thanks guys!

I ordered it with a side of:

Freddie Roach - Good Move!

Kenny Dorham - Afro-Cuban

Ben Webster - Soulville

Worth $10 for "Lady Bird" alone.

For me, one of the great highlights of this set of which there are many is the trumpet "battle" between Fats and Howard McGhee on "Double Talk". Great, great playing. I echo what others have said, get it!

A great set - some excellent Dameron sides, wonderful Wardell Gray, Howard McGhee. Can't go wrong with this one.

This was one of a group of fine doubletime sets which included the Ken McIntyre 'Complete UA Sessions' and the Kenton 'Innovations Orchestra' set. Almost like mini-Mosaic Selects, with excellent liner notes.

The Blue Note release is fantastic! I love it! Dameron's writing is so beautiful, I like that, I think, even better than Navarro's playing.

Don't miss this Milestone disc:

B000000XWA.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

It collects most (I think) of the existing air-shots of Dameron bands with Fats. There's more around on cheapo LPs (I have three of them), but mostly those have tracks with the Winding-Eager or the Winding-Powell-Eager frontline, and no Fats (which is fine with me).

I'll endorse all those reccmendations. This is a great set with outstanding music. If you want bop in it's purest form you needn't look further. I love it. And the sound is good too.

And if you develop a taste for Fats Navarro there's another set that might quell your thirst. It's The Fats Navarro Story on Proper. Not the older release which was divided into volumnes, but the full 4CD set. I think it's from 2000.

Haven't heard it but I have been told the selecction is very good (mostly culled from his SAvoy releases) and so is the sound. Considering its price tag I might go for it myself one of these days.

Definitely lots of beautiful music here! The Jazzland stuff is (partially?) on the disc in my last post, some (all?) of the BN is there, as are some Savoy takes and some non-Jazzland live recordings.

I suppose the date for the last two tracks is inaccurate, though. This is discussed in the 4CD set Charlie Parker at Birdland Vol. 1 (Ember/TKO).

Thanks for the recommendations, King Ubu and Bluesnik. I have been enjoying the two cd set enormously, I think I'll spin it this morning!
