Noj Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 (edited) Recommended? I can get it for $10, I'm wondering if it is worth it. Edited November 28, 2004 by Noj Quote
DrJ Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 (edited) Hi Noj - one minor correction, that's stuff from Blue Note and Capitol, no Pacific Jazz stuff for those guys. Regardless - GET IT, GET IT, GET IT! Full of truly top drawer bop, stuff that should be in EVERYONE'S collection in one form or another. $10 is a great price too. Sound on this set is perfectly acceptable, if not quite up to the Japanese RVGs of the FABULOUS FATS NAVARRO albums. Edited November 28, 2004 by DrJ Quote
Noj Posted November 28, 2004 Author Report Posted November 28, 2004 (edited) Oops, typo. Thanks for the recommendation and correction, Tony. Fixed! Edited November 28, 2004 by Noj Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 What DrJ said but from the thread title, I smell an Andoran reissue. Is this the case? Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 Shit happened before I posted - nevermind. Quote
Noj Posted November 28, 2004 Author Report Posted November 28, 2004 I'm ordering from the Jazz Heritage club. They don't have RVGs, but that's ok by me. Quote
Spontooneous Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 Worth $10 for "Lady Bird" alone. Warning: May cause obsession with Dameron's writing. At least that's how it worked for me. And I'm glad it did. Quote
Noj Posted November 28, 2004 Author Report Posted November 28, 2004 I've added it to the order. Thanks guys! I ordered it with a side of: Freddie Roach - Good Move! Kenny Dorham - Afro-Cuban Ben Webster - Soulville Also pondering... Count Basie Swings, Joe Williams Sings The Greatest!! Count Basie Plays, Joe Williams Sings Standards Quote
Big Wheel Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 You have to get the first Basie/Williams album. Simply gorgeous. Quote
MartyJazz Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 Worth $10 for "Lady Bird" alone. For me, one of the great highlights of this set of which there are many is the trumpet "battle" between Fats and Howard McGhee on "Double Talk". Great, great playing. I echo what others have said, get it! Quote
mikeweil Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 If it's the Blue Note - good set in good sound. No need for Andoran issues here. Quote
sidewinder Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 A great set - some excellent Dameron sides, wonderful Wardell Gray, Howard McGhee. Can't go wrong with this one. This was one of a group of fine doubletime sets which included the Ken McIntyre 'Complete UA Sessions' and the Kenton 'Innovations Orchestra' set. Almost like mini-Mosaic Selects, with excellent liner notes. Quote
pryan Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 I don't have the Fats/Tadd set yet, and don't know why I've passed it up so many times before. Quote
Big Al Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 Yes, what they all said before: GET IT!!!! My favorites are the two takes of "Double Talk" but it's all wonderful! Quote
Brad Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 I really can't add more than what's been said already but with Tadd -- and Fats -- how can you go wrong? Quote
Noj Posted December 22, 2004 Author Report Posted December 22, 2004 I'm giving Disc 1 its inaugural spin right now. B-) Quote
king ubu Posted December 22, 2004 Report Posted December 22, 2004 The Blue Note release is fantastic! I love it! Dameron's writing is so beautiful, I like that, I think, even better than Navarro's playing. Don't miss this Milestone disc: It collects most (I think) of the existing air-shots of Dameron bands with Fats. There's more around on cheapo LPs (I have three of them), but mostly those have tracks with the Winding-Eager or the Winding-Powell-Eager frontline, and no Fats (which is fine with me). ubu Quote
Noj Posted December 22, 2004 Author Report Posted December 22, 2004 Thanks for the recommendation, Ubu. Quote
king ubu Posted December 22, 2004 Report Posted December 22, 2004 welcome - hope you find it for a decent prize, it's quite an expansive disc. Quote
Bluesnik Posted January 16, 2005 Report Posted January 16, 2005 I'll endorse all those reccmendations. This is a great set with outstanding music. If you want bop in it's purest form you needn't look further. I love it. And the sound is good too. And if you develop a taste for Fats Navarro there's another set that might quell your thirst. It's The Fats Navarro Story on Proper. Not the older release which was divided into volumnes, but the full 4CD set. I think it's from 2000. Haven't heard it but I have been told the selecction is very good (mostly culled from his SAvoy releases) and so is the sound. Considering its price tag I might go for it myself one of these days.
