Capitol to Release Nat King Cole Documentary and Singles Collection

Almost 40 years after his death, Nat King Cole continues to sell millions of records every year around the world. To commemorate his death, Double Jab Productions will televise their documentary The World of Nat King Cole in February 2005 in both the United States and Europe. Capitol/EMI will simultaneously release a CD of Cole’s singles and a DVD of the documentary.

Double Jab’s documentary will feature interviews with Alan Livingston (former president of Capitol Records), Aretha Franklin, B.B. King, Bill Cosby, Carlos Santana, Ibrahim Ferrer, Les Paul, Outkast, Stevie Wonder, Tony Bennett and Whoopi Goldberg, as well as family members.

Kari Lia, producer of The World of Nat King Cole, described the contents and purpose behind the film. “The themes we explore in The World of Nat King Cole include Cole’s celebrity during his lifetime and the universal, timeless appeal of his music, with a special focus on Nat’s influential role within the Civil Rights movement in the United States. Nat King Cole was one of the first African Americans to break through major race barriers in the entertainment industry, and we found that to be an area of his life that has never been fully explored until now,” she said in a press release.

The corresponding CD, also titled The World of Nat King Cole, contains 28 remastered tracks from Cole’s career. The CD will be presented in several region-specific versions, each with a different track list to feature Cole’s most popular recordings in the different countries. In the United States, the track lists includes hits such as “It’s Only a Paper Moon,” “(Get Your Kicks On) Route 66,” “(I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons” and “Unforgettable.” Capitol/EMI will release the CD and DVD both individually and as a limited edition CD/DVD set.

After signing to Capitol Records in 1942 as one of its first artists, Cole recorded over 150 charting singles, more than any other artist on that label. Capitol eventually became known as “The House That Nat Built” and at the time of his death in 1965, it was reported that Capitol had sold over nine million of Cole’s albums.
