neveronfriday Posted November 26, 2004 Report Posted November 26, 2004 Now, I know my English sucks, so don't throw stones at me, please. Lately I've noticed an overabundance of "definately"s floating around the board (just search for the word). Is that the way it's going to be spelled in the near future, or is it still "definitely"? The reason I ask: the other day I came across two of these on the NYT site ... must have slipped through, I thought. Then I saw it on cnn.com, etc. Just wondering. Cheers! Quote
vibes Posted November 26, 2004 Report Posted November 26, 2004 It's definitely. And it always will be. Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted November 26, 2004 Report Posted November 26, 2004 Only boneheads who can't spell will use the A. Finish, Finite, Infinite, Definite, Definition. Not an A to be seen. Mike Quote
Late Posted November 26, 2004 Report Posted November 26, 2004 Some word processing programs' Spell Check software actually gives the word "defiantly" as the first choice when "definitely" is spelled with the letter A. I see this all the time in student papers. It can get pretty funny: "Elizabeth Bishop's poem The Fish defiantly describes an epiphany ... " Ouch. Quote
Son-of-a-Weizen Posted November 26, 2004 Report Posted November 26, 2004 We definitely add an 'e' to magazin as well. Quote

AfricaBrass Posted November 26, 2004 Report Posted November 26, 2004 My pet peave is lose vs. loose. Lose: To be unsuccessful in retaining possession of; mislay: He's always losing his car keys. Loose: Not fastened, restrained, or contained: loose bricks. I know my grammar is far from perfect (or even correct), but I see the misuse of loose in place of lose on almost every message board I visit. Quote
wesbed Posted November 26, 2004 Report Posted November 26, 2004 It seems lots of folks have a difficult time regarding the proper use of affect and effect. Quote

J.A.W. Posted November 26, 2004 Report Posted November 26, 2004 What about "their" instead of "they're"; I see that a lot. Quote
wesbed Posted November 26, 2004 Report Posted November 26, 2004 Yeah. There, their, and they're. I'm glad I had to learn the English language as my native language. I'd have never figured it out otherwise. Quote

Jim Alfredson Posted November 26, 2004 Report Posted November 26, 2004 I spell definitely wrong all the time. I don't know why. I'm a fairly decent speller, but that word always gets me. Quote
neveronfriday Posted November 26, 2004 Author Report Posted November 26, 2004 Yes, and you spell "gallery" with double-r. Strange language. huh? where is the double "r"? Err ... double "l" is what I meant to say. Too much rum. That one always gets me. English "gallery" is German "Galerie" which, of course, I always spell "Gallerie". Cheers! Quote
