wesbed Posted November 23, 2004 Report Posted November 23, 2004 (edited) The cover is cool. But, what the cover looks like is all I know. Who is the guy sitting behind Blakey? Edited November 23, 2004 by wesbed Quote
ASNL77 Posted November 23, 2004 Author Report Posted November 23, 2004 The cover is cool. But, what the cover looks like is all I know. Thanks for that Wesbed. Yes I really like the cover too .It's one of my favourites but it does not seeem to be the best of Blakey's stuff.5000 yen for two covers..... I am not sure! So come on everybody convince me there is more than the cover to enjoy with these two CDs! Quote
JSngry Posted November 23, 2004 Report Posted November 23, 2004 Who is the guy sitting behind Blakey? MANGO! Quote
JSngry Posted November 23, 2004 Report Posted November 23, 2004 Seriously, it's another one of Blakey's drum choir records. I like 'em. YMMV. Quote
wesbed Posted November 23, 2004 Report Posted November 23, 2004 MANGO! He looks like he's at a Beatles-esque 'jazz in' or something. Is his name really Mango? Quote

Brad Posted November 23, 2004 Report Posted November 23, 2004 If you're expecting the Jazz Messengers, don't buy it. It's not that kind of album. Quote
Big Wheel Posted November 23, 2004 Report Posted November 23, 2004 Out of the percussion-heavy Blakey records I have heard The African Beat is far and away my favorite, but these are pretty solid also. Get them if you cannot have enough Blakey. If you are willing to wait for cheaper US releases, my guess is that they will be out in the next 18 months or so--they're about the only Blakey records that have not seen reissue in the US in at least the last decade (perhaps never). Michael Fitzgerald Posted November 23, 2004 Report Posted November 23, 2004 If you skip over these records, you'll miss out on some very wonderful performances that are quite straight-ahead - "Reflection" and "Swingin' Kilts" both by Ray Bryant, and "Mirage" allegedly by Art Blakey (it's not the Mal Waldron composition). Not the Jazz Messengers, but not entirely Afro-Cuban. I'd say Holiday For Skins is my favorite of the percussion records. I think both would fit on one CD, so that would be a nice reissue. Mike Quote
