Son-of-a-Weizen Posted May 31, 2003 Report Posted May 31, 2003 Since every number on the cd was written by Golson, how is it that this wound up being a Morgan session? Golson had already led a BN session ('Philadelphians') by this time hadn't he? Even though I'm quite fond of "Mesabi Chant" and "Tip-Toeing" it's one of those cds that just doesn't get pulled from the stax all that often...and I never see much chatter about it either --- is it viewed as sub-standard or so? Hard to believe. Quote
Big Wheel Posted May 31, 2003 Report Posted May 31, 2003 Golson and the Philadelphians was a United Artists session. Patrick Roques did a very nice job of approximating a Reid Miles cover for that one, though. Quote
SEK Posted May 31, 2003 Report Posted May 31, 2003 Since every number on the cd was written by Golson, how is it that this wound up being a Morgan session? I think that some of these things can be somewhat arbitrary. Whether under Morgan's or Golson's name, the music on "Lee Morgan Vol. 3" would be among my favorite programs from the '50s. "Hasaan's Dream" and "I Remember Clifford" are especially memorable. Quote

Son-of-a-Weizen Posted May 31, 2003 Author Report Posted May 31, 2003 Thanks for setting me straight on that Wheel....didn't know that. Wonder why this didn't end up as a UA session? Quote
Dan Gould Posted May 31, 2003 Report Posted May 31, 2003 Thanks for setting me straight on that Wheel....didn't know that. Wonder why this didn't end up as a UA session? Uh .... because it was organized by Alfred Lion whose company had no relationship to United Artists at the time? Quote
Son-of-a-Weizen Posted May 31, 2003 Author Report Posted May 31, 2003 (edited) Uh...you're right......I need more coffee. (I was just thinkin' that with all of these great tunes...it shoulda been a UA organized session with Morgan playing the sideman). Edited May 31, 2003 by Son-of-a-Weizen Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted August 24, 2004 Report Posted August 24, 2004 (edited) Patrick Roques did a very nice job of approximating a Reid Miles cover for that one, though. Had to look this one up - as it was a cover I had never seen before. Here 't is... Just picked up a used copy of this CD today. Haven't listened to quite all of it yet, but what I've heard -- I like!! EDIT: Listened to the whole thing in the car, while driving around town to various appointments. Great disc. Always good to have some more Lee that I didn't have previously. Edited August 25, 2004 by Rooster_Ties Quote
blue-note-ojc Posted August 25, 2004 Report Posted August 25, 2004 You are so right, Rooster Ties, about it always being so good to have more Lee Morgan. I have between 85 and 90 CDs with Lee as leader or sideman and it isn't enough. The ones I know of that I do not have are either larger groups than I normally like, or that I think are too free for my taste. One with a large group I do have, of course, is with Gillespie at Newport. Never too much Lee Morgan! Tom Quote
Jim R Posted August 26, 2004 Report Posted August 26, 2004 There were a couple of different covers for the UA LP's. I had one that looked pretty much like this, as I recall: Quote

While I enjoy the session it is not SFNL.. Still, there is very little Lee that I do not enjoy. I have the Golson disc as well. Pretty good date as I recall. Quote

Hard to believe. Getting back to the original question, this is a very good session and from my recollection of the Mosaic book quite highly viewed. Hassan's Dream is very well written and tells a great story. Lee's rendition of I Remember Clifford is the most moving version I've heard of this (although not the original one). Quote
blue-note-ojc Posted August 26, 2004 Report Posted August 26, 2004 Who recorded the original version of I REMEMBER CLIFFORD and what record was it on? I agree that it is the most moving I have heard and I have quite a few versions. Tom Quote

It was white with Philadelphians in large block letters in pink/rose. Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted August 27, 2004 Report Posted August 27, 2004 The first recorded version of I Remember Clifford is on the first Gigi Gryce/Donald Byrd Jazz Lab album for Columbia (January 13, 1957). Gigi Gryce also got there first on Benny Golson's Blues March, recorded for Metrojazz. Mike Quote
blue-note-ojc Posted August 28, 2004 Report Posted August 28, 2004 Mike, Thanks for helping me yet again. I do not have that version of I Remember Clifford. Tom Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted August 28, 2004 Report Posted August 28, 2004 You can get it on a Collectables (almost) two-fer. It has all of the first album and most of the second. COL-5674 Mike Quote
blue-note-ojc Posted August 29, 2004 Report Posted August 29, 2004 Mike, Another thanks is in order. Tom Quote
