My apologies if so... but tomorrow (Sunday, Nov. 21) will be the 100th anniversary of Coleman Hawkins' birth. Hats off to the Hawk! Long may his music continue to fly. I'm devoting tonight's Night Lights program to his early-1960s recordings, and I'm sure there will be radio tributes on jazz stations around the country this weekend as well. Tomorrow I'll be dusting off the Keynotes and some other classic Bean in celebration of his life and work. Quote

I love "Straight Ahead" but had to drop it to fit everything into one hour... I envy you your five-hour time slot! Your playlist does great justice to Hawk--even at five hours, I'll bet that was a challenge for an artist whose career lasted so long and spanned so many stylistic changes in jazz. Quote

Could the album have been Today and Now? That one's chalk full of some sensuous ballads. One of my favorite later period Bean recordings. Late Posted November 23, 2004 Report Posted November 23, 2004 (edited) No kidding. Great looking mouthpiece. Did Bean have his own series (per the other pic)? Tony, I think you'll like that Impulse! title. I have the Japanese pressing, and the sound is very nice. Here's the American pressing. (Couldn't find the Japanese one online.) Now that I've revisited it, it's probably not "chalk full" of ballads, but that ballad is a highlight of the disc. The other tracks are equally as nice (with perhaps the exception of the "Scottish" tune). Edited November 23, 2004 by Late Quote

That is indeed a good 'un--I played only one track apiece from the albums I chose for the Night Lights program, and "Apache" was the one I seized upon from TODAY. It was written by David Raksin of "Laura" fame, and I believe Hawk's interpretation was the first-ever jazz version (the movie came out in 1954). Quote

Count me in this group "mad-to-death lovers" of Bean's interpretation "Love Song from 'Apache'". First heard it on that Impulse album, and it took my body and soul, forever. There is something magical about that track, don't know what. Still, it is one of the greatiest moments in jazz-ballad interpretation, ever. Edited November 24, 2004 by mmilovan Quote
