ghost of miles Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 Did I miss a thread anywhere? My apologies if so... but tomorrow (Sunday, Nov. 21) will be the 100th anniversary of Coleman Hawkins' birth. Hats off to the Hawk! Long may his music continue to fly. I'm devoting tonight's Night Lights program to his early-1960s recordings, and I'm sure there will be radio tributes on jazz stations around the country this weekend as well. Tomorrow I'll be dusting off the Keynotes and some other classic Bean in celebration of his life and work. Quote
stevebop Posted November 21, 2004 Report Posted November 21, 2004 Follow this link to my Hawkins playlist. I featured five hours of Bean on my show Friday night: http://www.wgbh.org/playlists/playlist?pro...list_id=1809801 Quote

I featured five hours of Bean on my show Friday night: http://www.wgbh.org/playlists/playlist?pro...list_id=1809801 Looks like it was a great show, Steve! I love "Straight Ahead" but had to drop it to fit everything into one hour... I envy you your five-hour time slot! Your playlist does great justice to Hawk--even at five hours, I'll bet that was a challenge for an artist whose career lasted so long and spanned so many stylistic changes in jazz. Quote
ghost of miles Posted November 21, 2004 Author Report Posted November 21, 2004 Up for Bean's 100th. Trivia question: in the Tom Hanks movie ROAD TO PERDITION, what song is playing in the background when Jude Law confronts Hanks in a roadside diner? Quote
ghost of miles Posted November 21, 2004 Author Report Posted November 21, 2004 Tipped off by another's post in "What are you listening to?", I can report that WKCR is doing an all-day tribute to Hawkins right now. Quote
Guest ariceffron Posted November 21, 2004 Report Posted November 21, 2004 hapy 100 bday coleman hawkins!!!!!!!!!!!! Quote
DrJ Posted November 21, 2004 Report Posted November 21, 2004 There was a nice, fairly detailed piece about Hawkins on Scott Simon's Saturday AM show on NPR this week. Not only did I enjoy the piece, but they played a later ballad performance from one of his Impulse! recordings that I am now going to track down, beautiful. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted November 22, 2004 Report Posted November 22, 2004 Haven't been here all day, but I was counting on finding this thread here when I did manage to make it. Thanks! Quote
Clunky Posted November 22, 2004 Report Posted November 22, 2004 (edited) Alyn Shipton is doing an excellent three part series on Hawk on BBC Radio 3 at 1800 on Saturdays, final instalment next Saturday. Not sure if it's available over the net though try hereBBC jazz page Edited November 22, 2004 by Clunky Quote

Could the album have been Today and Now? That one's chalk full of some sensuous ballads. One of my favorite later period Bean recordings. Happy 100 to one of the classiest of them all: Here is a picture of Bean's Otto Link, and another one. Quote
BruceH Posted November 22, 2004 Report Posted November 22, 2004 In addition to all that talent, he sure was one dapper guy. Quote
Big Al Posted November 22, 2004 Report Posted November 22, 2004 Listening to the Phil Schapp.... er, I mean Coleman Hawkins celebration on WKCR. Gad, I love the web! Always loved it when he & Ben Webster got together! Quote

Yep, it was from that CD which has rocketed to the top of my "must purchase" list based on the tune I heard ("Love Song from 'Apache'") as well as your comments Late! Quote
Late Posted November 23, 2004 Report Posted November 23, 2004 (edited) No kidding. Great looking mouthpiece. Did Bean have his own series (per the other pic)? Tony, I think you'll like that Impulse! title. I have the Japanese pressing, and the sound is very nice. Here's the American pressing. (Couldn't find the Japanese one online.) Now that I've revisited it, it's probably not "chalk full" of ballads, but that ballad is a highlight of the disc. The other tracks are equally as nice (with perhaps the exception of the "Scottish" tune). Edited November 23, 2004 by Late Quote

That is indeed a good 'un--I played only one track apiece from the albums I chose for the Night Lights program, and "Apache" was the one I seized upon from TODAY. It was written by David Raksin of "Laura" fame, and I believe Hawk's interpretation was the first-ever jazz version (the movie came out in 1954). Quote

Trivia question: in the Tom Hanks movie ROAD TO PERDITION, what song is playing in the background when Jude Law confronts Hanks in a roadside diner? All right, all right, you all can just stop now with the relentless PMs, the ceaseless posts, and the late-night hounding via telephone--the answer is "Queer Notions." Quote

Count me in this group "mad-to-death lovers" of Bean's interpretation "Love Song from 'Apache'". First heard it on that Impulse album, and it took my body and soul, forever. There is something magical about that track, don't know what. Still, it is one of the greatiest moments in jazz-ballad interpretation, ever. Edited November 24, 2004 by mmilovan Quote
wolff Posted November 24, 2004 Report Posted November 24, 2004 For Hawkins ballads in my collection I turn to Good Old Broadway(Prestige/Moodsville) on a very regular basis. Sublime! Quote
