chris olivarez Posted June 24, 2005 Report Posted June 24, 2005 Didn't work for me. ← This live lineup or the original albums? ← The original or more specifically James Spaulding. I just don't feel that he melded well with Hubbbard and Morgan. I liked Spaulding's work on Horace Silver's "Jody Grind" but on the "Cookers" I found his playing-for lack of a better word-"abrasive" to my ears. Quote
BFrank Posted June 24, 2005 Report Posted June 24, 2005 Well, I gotta say this new show - Charles Tolliver, Billy Harper, John Hicks - worth seeing, regardless. Quote
BFrank Posted July 24, 2005 Report Posted July 24, 2005 Here's the official lineup of this show at Yoshi's: September 1 - 4 Night of the Cookers Billy Harper, James Spaulding, John Hicks, Charles Tolliver, David Weiss, Roy McCurdy Quote

Hey, Roy is a hometown boy! Edited July 25, 2005 by marcello Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted July 25, 2005 Report Posted July 25, 2005 More than "kind'a sad" folks have to cling to a bad recording to get a gig. Quote
StormP Posted July 25, 2005 Report Posted July 25, 2005 Today's suggestion: JAZZ DIRECTORY by Dave Carey & Albert McCarthy. I'm really heavy into Volume 3 (E-F-G), the book's getting a little ratty. I read a little every night. I am all the way up to: "Four Nuts And A Peanut". That's Peanuts Holland. Quote
BFrank Posted July 25, 2005 Report Posted July 25, 2005 More than "kind'a sad" folks have to cling to a bad recording to get a gig. ← So, Chuck, you see no redeeming value in this show?? Looks to me like they're putting together a blowing session in the spirit of the original concept (whether that was ultimately successful or not). You gotta admit, the original lineup was very promising ... and so is this. Quote
brownie Posted July 25, 2005 Report Posted July 25, 2005 The original session may not have been so good (I like it -_- ) but it was a great album title. No wonder it's still being used years after... Quote
BFrank Posted August 28, 2005 Report Posted August 28, 2005 Night of the Cookers show at Yoshi's next weekend. BE there! Quote
clifford_thornton Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 I'd like to see it too... guess they aren't taking it on the road? The original albums are fine by me; I'm keeping them for sure. Spaulding storms, especially on Volume 2. Quote
Soul Stream Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 Night of the Cookers is just a tag, a handle the club can put on the gig to promote it a bit. Nothing wrong with that. It's a cool title. And good music or not, those were great musicians on that album. Musicians working is the bottom line and ain't nothing wrong with that. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 well said Soulstream. And again unlike many on here I do enjoy the "Night of the Cookers" albums very much, they are just fun. Quote

Soul Stream Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 No he didn't. ← Thanks for elaborating... Quote
Guest youmustbe Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 James has trouble with the Metro Card machine in the subway, so his ability to put a group together for a tour is way beyong his mental abilities. And he will not be at Yoshi's. Quote
Soul Stream Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 Was he originally scheduled and then dropped out? I confess, I don't know much about the non-recorded side of James Spaulding. Does he play shows much these days? Quote
bertrand Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 I'll add James Spaulding to the list of people to whom youmustbe shows nothing but venomous disdain. Let's recap: 1. Keith Jarrett 2. Wayne Shorter 3. Michelle Mercer 4. Al Jarreau 5. Kurt Elling 6. James Spaulding I wonder how all these people feel about you. Bertrand. Quote
Guest youmustbe Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 You forgot to add yourself. Quote

ValerieB Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 i heard james spaulding a couple of years ago at the fairfield(?) jazz festival in connecticut. he was wonderful! Quote
