Larry Kart Posted November 19, 2004 Report Posted November 19, 2004 For those in the Chicago area, I'll be signing the book at 1 p.m. until... on Saturday, Nov. 27, at the Jazz Record Mart, 444 N. Wabash Ave. Hope to meet some people that I've only know from their posts. Quote
bertrand Posted November 19, 2004 Report Posted November 19, 2004 Larry, Let us know if your whirlwind book tour takes you to D.C. I'll check Access Hollywood periodically for updates as well. Bertrand. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 Don't deface my book! I'm a serious collector! Quote
Brad Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 Are you going to be signing any in the New York area? Quote
Larry Kart Posted November 20, 2004 Author Report Posted November 20, 2004 I'd like to get to other cities -- New York, D.C., Boston, the San Francisco area, etc. -- but illness in the family (my 92-year-old father) may make it impossible for me to get away from home base for a good while. I'm trying to think my way through this though, aware that emotional inertia/stress plus ignorance of how to go about things in the promotional realm may be contributing to my sense that my feet are pretty much nailed to the ground right now. alankin Posted November 21, 2004 Report Posted November 21, 2004 I'm enjoying your book quite a bit. Just read your two items on Hank Mobley -- I'm going to have another listen to some of his recordings with your comments in mind. There's a lot to think about throughout the book. Maybe you could get Fresh Air interested? Terry Gross enjoys jazz... Quote
Larry Kart Posted November 21, 2004 Author Report Posted November 21, 2004 Thanks, Alankin -- I like those Mobley pieces. For me, listening to Hank is always an on-the-edge experience. The surprises never stop being surprises, even when it's a solo you've almost memorized. That's a rare thing, I think. Terry Gross also enjoys jazz critics. As you probably know, she's married to Francis Davis. I asked the publisher sent a copies of the book to Davis and to Gross's producer. I have my fingers crossed. Quote
alankin Posted November 21, 2004 Report Posted November 21, 2004 I somewhat know her producer (we had kids in the same school a couple years ago [small world, isn't it!]). If I can locate his email address, maybe I'll put in a plug... Quote

I'm sorry to hear this. I'll keep my fingers crossed about you appearing on Fresh Air. Meanwhile, I've requested several libraries to purchase your book. Quote
sidewinder Posted November 21, 2004 Report Posted November 21, 2004 Just put in a special family request to have a copy of this for Xmas ! Looks like it's readily available via Amazon UK. Quote
JSngry Posted November 21, 2004 Report Posted November 21, 2004 Terry Gross also enjoys jazz critics. As you probably know, she's married to Francis Davis. So, how "enjoyable" are you, Larry? Quote
Larry Kart Posted November 22, 2004 Author Report Posted November 22, 2004 How enjoyable? Well, my wife is at least as smart, kind, fun, etc. as Terry Gross seems to be, and she's put up with me for 33 years. Quote

GregK Posted November 22, 2004 Report Posted November 22, 2004 Please post somewhere on hear if and when you will be appearing on Fresh Air, Larry. I'd like to hear it, and I don't get a chance to listen every day so a heads-up would be great. This book is also on my Christmas list Quote
Larry Kart Posted November 22, 2004 Author Report Posted November 22, 2004 "Get that woman a radio show!!!!" In her view, she's not for public consumption. I'll certainly say hey if I get hooked up with Terry Gross. Quote

Larry Kart Posted November 22, 2004 Author Report Posted November 22, 2004 She likes Terry Gross too. Hmm... Quote
ghost of miles Posted November 26, 2004 Report Posted November 26, 2004 Are we talkin' public radio orgies here? Larry, I may ask my brother to swing by your signing tomorrow and buy a signed copy--my birthday's coming up, and his wife runs the nearby Borders store, so he's in that neck of the Chicago woods anyway on numerous occasions. Quote
Larry Kart Posted November 29, 2004 Author Report Posted November 29, 2004 Hi Ghost -- Met your brother. Signing went well, or at least that's what they told me -- sold about 10 or 12 copies, which they said was good (at least on a lousy weather day). Most important for me, it was pleasant in simple human terms -- someone nice to talk to as long as it lasted (about 2 1/2 hours), including two older gents who hadn't come for the signing but bought copies of the book after leafing through it. One of them turned out to have moved three weeks ago from Chicago to Whitehall, Mi., where Chuck and Ann live. This guy, in his mid-70s it seemed, had some great stories about gigs at South Side Chicago clubs like the Crown Propeller Lounge, including one where both Jimmy Smith and Jack McDuff were on the bill, and they played at each other for part of the evening from opposite sides of the room. Larry, after you emailed me about this I looked up the address and ran a map program on the computer. They seem to live 448 yards from our house. Quote
JSngry Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 A bit long for a field goal, but if you got the wind to your back... Quote
BruceH Posted November 30, 2004 Report Posted November 30, 2004 Got the book today! I just couldn't wait for Christmas. Quote
