kenny weir Posted November 19, 2004 Report Posted November 19, 2004 (edited) Very US-centric, but fun anyway. I was most interested to see if New Orleans - equal best city in the world (with Melbourne) - would make my list. It did. But yah - no questions about jazz etc, nor specific nitty gritty about tucker (oz for food) mean it's pretty lame really. In order: San Diego (Hi James!) Orange County Honolulu Baton Rouge New Orleans Baltimore ( ) Long beach Oakland Little Rock Providence Newhaven Portland Los Angeles ( ) San Francisco Washington DoC Milwaukee Boston Worcester San Jose Sacramento Las Vegas ( ) Chicago Hartford Lafayette (cool!) Leeway Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 In 1987, I made a choice to leave Paris, France and move to Washington, D.C. Both are among the most beautiful and culturally exciting cities in the world. It was not an easy choice, what with most of my family in France, but I knew that for personal and professional reasons, the U.S. was a better fit for me. I was able to go back and forth thanks to my dual nationality. For the first time in seventeen years, the election (NOT reelection) of the tyrant-in-chief has made me question whether I made the right decision. I have way too many commitments to the U.S. now to probably ever go back (who else is going to dust off those copyright deposits at the Library of Congress ), but I never thought I would ever be in a situation where I would even question my decision. And remember, I moved here during the Reagan years! Bertrand. When people stop whining and bitching for a minute, I think they probably realize the US is a pretty nice place to live! I've only visited Paris, but I know I would love to live there. It's beautiful and civilized. I know it sounds like a cheap shot or something, but I find the US less and less beautiful and civilized as I get older. I never thought I'd say that, but the strip-mall-ification, Wal-Martification, McMansioning of America really has turned me off. Hey Bertrand, DC really can't compare to Paris! But it was nice of you to give your town (and mine) a civic boost Quote
GA Russell Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 Greenville, SC Tulsa, OK Clarksville, TN Jackson, MS Athens, GA Tuscaloosa, AL I was hoping for a site in Louisiana, but I suspect my thumbs down on humidity eliminated that! Two years ago I moved away from a town twenty miles from Athens, GA. Now that I live in North Carolina, I'm surprised to find that NC didn't have a site in my top 20. Lots of Texas, though. Quote
Ed S Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 (edited) I'll take Paris any day. Best trip of my life - a week in Paris, a drive through the countryside to Lyon for 2 nights, on to Geneva for 4 nights, then to Chamonix for 3 nights, through the Mont Blanc Tunnel to Florence. 3 nights in Florence then to Cannes for a week with a stop in Pisa on the way. After driving around the Riviera for a week visiting places like Monte Carlo, Nice, Juan les Pins, Antibes, St Paul du Vence and yes the Fondation Maeght, surrendered the car and took the TGV back to Paris for another 4 nights. Loved Paris, loved France. It's a beautiful country. Hope to be able to make it back some day. Edited November 20, 2004 by Ed Swinnich Quote
