reg Posted November 18, 2004 Report Posted November 18, 2004 Verve: Norman Granz: The Conscience of Jazz by Tad Hershorn (link) anyone know anything about this book? due out aug 2005? history of verve maybe? Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted November 18, 2004 Report Posted November 18, 2004 It will be a bio of Granz. Or how about THE bio of Granz. Tad Hershorn is an archivist at the Rutgers Institute of Jazz Studies. He had cooperation from Granz himself, and now the family. This will be a great book. Tad has told me some of the fascinating stories he's gotten from people who were NEVER known, and certainly not previously interviewed. The big name Verve/Pablo stars also cooperated. Mike Quote
brownie Posted November 18, 2004 Report Posted November 18, 2004 (edited) Tad Hershorn has been working on this biography for several years now. He is an archivist at the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University. It should be an interesting read on one of the most fascinating personality in jazz. Hope it won't be a disappointment! Edit after catching up on Michael Fitzgerald's post which makes the book seem really worth waiting for... Edited November 18, 2004 by brownie Quote
Brad Posted November 19, 2004 Report Posted November 19, 2004 This is very strange. Amazon UK has it listed for pre-ordering but not Amazon US. I wonder if Amistad Press, the publisher, is European based. At any rate, it's something I'll want to buy. Quote
ghost of miles Posted September 24, 2006 Report Posted September 24, 2006 Any word on this? I recently got the Granz Jam Sessions box through BMG & noticed mention of the forthcoming book in the credits (under a different title--LET FREEDOM SWING). Look forward to reading it, whenever it comes out. Quote
Ken Dryden Posted September 25, 2006 Report Posted September 25, 2006 Sounds like a winner to me...I look forward to the Granz bio. Quote
ghost of miles Posted October 23, 2009 Report Posted October 23, 2009 Up--this book is referred to (under a slightly different title) in the footnotes of Robin Kelley's new Monk bio. Any news about it? An initial search of Amazon turned up nothing. Quote
Don Brown Posted October 23, 2009 Report Posted October 23, 2009 The title of the book appears to be Verve: Norman Granz: The Conscience of Jazz and is listed as "Available for pre-order" on Amazon.ca, but the publication date is shown as July 7, 2019! Quote
