Late Posted November 18, 2004 Report Posted November 18, 2004 Bloop loop honk blatt tweet!!! Don't think it would fit in the RVG series. Quote
Brandon Burke Posted November 18, 2004 Report Posted November 18, 2004 As for King Ubu's comment: As I remember, the compact disc available in the States combines both sessions and has the cover I included earlier not the one used on the Open House LP. I have that and agree it's perfectly reasonable. Ubu's cover is correct. This is the BN cd for the combined lps. The cover you posted is the dreaded Applause item. Fair enough. My copies of these sessions are both on LP so I'm working from memory here. Which bring up another point.... Is it just me or do very few stores actually stock that CD. In all seriousness, I didn't even know it existed until just a few years ago because it's never on the racks anywhere. Quote
Soulstation1 Posted November 19, 2004 Report Posted November 19, 2004 what about harold vick's "steppin' out"? i'd like to own a real copy instead of a cdr Quote
Gary Posted November 19, 2004 Report Posted November 19, 2004 I've only heard the title track & I'd love to hear the rest of it. Quote
John B Posted November 19, 2004 Report Posted November 19, 2004 I've only heard the title track & I'd love to hear the rest of it. not going to happen, as Water records just reissued this and the other Eddie Gale BN. You should grab those, I really think you'd enjoy them. Quote

Late Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 RVG/Water, whatever. As long as I can hear it through the speakers, it's all good. Exactly. You'll probably like both of them, Gary. I actually prefer Ghetto Music to Black Rhythm Happening, but both are definitely worth owning. Now, not to stir the pot too much, but I did hear the nastiest rumor ... that the pop artist Jewel was slated to cover Gale's "The Rain" for a future release. I don't actually believe it — perhaps an urban myth? — but that would be something. Quote
jazzbo Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 Those Water reissues of the two Gales are among my favorite reissues of the last few years, in the top twenty. GET THEM GARY! Job very well done! Excellent music! Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 Exactly. You'll probably like both of them, Gary. I actually prefer Ghetto Music to Black Rhythm Happening, but both are definitely worth owning. FWIW, I prefer "Ghetto Music" too. It just seems to work better, and there's more blowing on it too. Parkertown Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 I didn't know Water had reissued these Gale Blue Notes. I had only known of the Duke Pearson "The Phantom" and Reuben Wilson's "A Groovy Situation." And those are knockouts! A couple questions: 1) Are there any others than these 4? 2) Who is doing the remastering of these? There is no credit in the two mentioned above. Anyone? Buehler? Cuz I think they sound great! B-) Quote
Bluerein Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 2) Ron McMaster!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Quote
jazzbo Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 I think they sound great too! Gary Hobish did the remastering on the two Gales, and possibly on the Pearson and Wilson (I hear similarity). Quote
Bluerein Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 Lon didn't see my posting I guess (which was a joke of course). Do you know about Gary, Lon? Quote

jazzbo Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 Maybe he's just doing the mastering on the Gales? Anyway, we have some of his work for Fantasy! Quote
wesbed Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 I'd like to see more RVGing, McMastering, or just remastering of the titles from this era of the Blue Note catalog: Quote
jazzbo Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 Yeah, me too. . . except for the McMastering part! NOT a fan! Quote
wolff Posted November 21, 2004 Report Posted November 21, 2004 I love the Plays Fats Waller record. So you won't hear a complaint from me. A high point in Rudy's engineering career in my opinion. I have originals of this one(the stereo and the folded down mono). Just curious, as to what you you like about it? Quote
sidewinder Posted November 21, 2004 Report Posted November 21, 2004 (edited) Now, not to stir the pot too much, but I did hear the nastiest rumor ... that the pop artist Jewel was slated to cover Gale's "The Rain" for a future release. I don't actually believe it — perhaps an urban myth? — but that would be something. I'm inclined to believe it. I was in an HMV shop the other week and there was a remix version of 'Song of Will' playing (might have been Madlib or something of that ilk). Certainly got my attention, although it added diddly-squat to the Gale original. Maybe Gale's albums have been latched on in similar fashion by the pop bimbo brigade...
