Leeway Posted April 6, 2014 Report Share Posted April 6, 2014 Fighting a stubborn cold, and nasty wet -cold weather, took a run up to Philadelphia on Friday evening 4/4 to catch JOOKLO DUO, from Italy, for some finely frenzied free blowing and drumming, at Pageant Soloveev Gallery. Also caught on same bill Jack Wright group with Michael Evans on percussion (and I do mean percussion), and Joe Moffett on trumpet. Both sets very rewarding, enough to justify the I-95 runs. A Lark Ascending Posted April 11, 2014 Report Share Posted April 11, 2014 Julie Fowlis in a funny crescent shaped room at the back of Sheffield City Hall. She looks like a contestant for the X-Factor but, four albums into her career (plus contributions to other band LPs and Transatlantic Sessions appearances), is sill performing straight Scots Gaelic folk music. One of the loveliest voices around today and a small but very powerful band (bouzouki, guitar, fiddle (Duncan Chisholm who is fast becoming a star in his own name) with very accomplished whistle (and the odd bit of harmonium) from the singer). And the chat did clear up a few things about them - I could never work out what came first, the jazz or the baroque. Seems it was the jazz. papsrus Posted April 15, 2014 Report Share Posted April 15, 2014 Saw our own Jeff Crompton and the 4th Ward Klezmer Orchestra recently at the Pensacola Jazz Fest. Outstanding band. Great energy. More than a couple of people around me said "I love this band," including the guy shooting photos for the event. And I'll go ahead and plug the new CD as well, "Abdul the Rabbi," which I snagged at one of the tents selling merchandise. Had a beer and some grub with Jeff and a couple of the fellas in the band afterward. Unfortunately, they had to run and the weather turned sour, so I bugged out. But it was great hearing Jeff play. Justin V Posted April 16, 2014 Report Share Posted April 16, 2014 (edited) On the 4th, I saw McCoy Tyner with Gerald Cannon, Francisco Mela and special guest Terence Blanchard. McCoy still plays with incredible power and sensitivity, and Blanchard sounded inspired. On the 1tth, I saw a short set by Christian McBride, Christian Sands and Carl Allen. I'd never heard Sands before, but he is a very impressive young pianist with a firm grasp of history and technique to spare. I'm looking forward to hearing the trio play a full-length set in the future. On the 12th, I saw Horizon, with Bobby Watson, Terell Stafford, Edward Simon, Peter Washington and Victor Lewis. I've seen Watson and Washington before, but it was my first time seeing the other members of the band. This is a top-notch working band. I had front-row tickets for both sets and thankfully overcame car problems to attend. Lewis is criminally underrated. I think that it was the first time that I'd seen a drummer using two snares.
