Tonight's outing:

Thursday, March 13, 2014 – 8pm - $12 general public / $7 students

JOE LOVANO/MARK HELIAS/TOM GIAMPIETRO TRIO: A TRIBUTE TO ED BLACKWELL

Bowker Auditorium – University of Massachusetts – Amherst, MA

Very strong performance last night. During the approximately ninety minute set the trio focused on tunes by Lovano and Helias that both recorded with Blackwell on several recordings in the early nineties. The trio clicked well together and solos by Lovano and Helias were consistently engaging. I was not familiar with Giampietro - I believe he teaches at UMASS. His playing throughout was somewhat understated, but appropriate. When he had a chance to solo he displayed a somewhat Blackwellesque emphasis on form rather than simply bashing away. That was appreciated.

I traveled to the show with Kunle Mwanga, who some may remember as David Murray's former manager who also produced a lot of concerts. Mwanga roomed with Blackwell during the last couple of years of his life and the too were close. I had not interacted with him much before, but it was very nice getting to know him a bit. He made the drive enjoyable.

Overall, a good night out even though I am paying for it today at work after getting very little sleep last night.

Well I know which live music I won't be seeing tonight (terribly sad I can't make it)

Eric Revis' Quartet @ the Bimhuis (Amsterdam) with Bill McHenry, Chad Taylor and Darius Jones

I read something somewhere recently about this ensemble. This is a group I would love to see and/or hear very soon.

I was fortunate to hear Ravi Coltrane and Luis Perdomo play duets at Hamilton Stage in Rahway, NJ last night. On stage interview with Gary Walker (WBGO) and an hour set recorded for NPR. We're so lucky to have world class jazz in our tiny town.

I heard Charles Tolliver there in December and Steve Turre last month.

Looking forward to what is billed as an "Anglo-Israeli Alto Summit" tonight - Alan Barnes and Gilad Atzmon.

Wow! Should be a good evening of music, Bill. Look forward to a report.

Well yes, certainly a good evening! Atzmon is a very powerful player - his physique, extrovert approach, showmanship and volume reminded me of Cannonball (yes, I saw him too!) You wouldn't have noticed this in a recording studio, but in the smallish room in Wilmslow (audience of 60) with no mics Alan was clearly out-blown when both were on alto, something that never happens when he's paired with Greg Abate. After the first number Alan retreated to a ballad and brought out his baritone, only to have Gilad say it looked "like an Israeli weapon". Gilad also came up to expectations by inserting quotes from Fiddler on the Roof into "All the Things You Are" and on "My Funny Valentine" his clarinet had a decided klezmer sound, his coda leading into a klezmer rhythm which was eventually picked up by Alan and even by local pianist Vinnie Parker!

Nice report, Bill. Thanks. I've never heard Atzmon, but he sounds like someone I would like. I'll have to check him out.

The Connecticut College Department of Music presents Mario Pavone in concert, Friday, March 28, at 7 p.m. in Evans Hall of Cummings Arts Center.

Pavone will be accompanied by the Orange Ensemble, a variant of his acclaimed Orange Double Tenor group that includes Dave Ballou (trumpet, flugelhorn), Ellery Eskelin (tenor saxophone), Kris Allen (alto saxophone), Peter McEachern (trombone), Gerald Cleaver (drums) and Matt Mitchell (piano).

This is where I will roam tonight. If it ends early enough, I may take the fifty minute drive down to New Haven to catch the second set of the Kevin Hays trio at Firehouse 12.

Due to be seeing Gilad's Orient House Ensemble within the next few weeks. Always worth checking out. He was on bagpipes at Swanage on one occasion. :)

Wayne's group was on fire tonight! The communication between those 4 musicians is just spectacular. Can't single out any one performance or solo, but that's how that group operates - it's the 'journey' not the end point. Kudos to all!

Sadly, living in Nebraska, I don't get to join this conversation often. I got to see the Wayne Shorter Quartet tonight. Yeah!
