First half was Charles with a small group, suffered a bit from the Barbican acoustics muddying the sound. Charles didn't play too much solo but checking his age (82), that was perhaps understandable. He gave a lot of space (maybe too much) to Camilla Thurman on tenor. The second half, the big band, worked better for me.  Spirited stuff and the power of the band really cut through.

That Tolliver show was in 2007. I was on that gig! I don't remember everyone who was there but Kiane Ziwadi was probably not there and Alvin Queen definitely wasn't. I don't think Alvin ever played with this version of the big band. Gene Jackson probably played drums.

Yes David, come to think of it I do remember you in the trumpets. Alvin Queen I was probably confusing with the much later Strata-East tribute but I do have recollections of Kiane Zawadi playing a bass trombone. Wish I'd made a written list at the time. Gene Jackson - yes, that rings a bell.

The TV show still gets repeats on various channels and the back of my head can be briefly glimpsed !

Was in NYC last week for Jazz Congress and managed to catch Deanna Witkowski at Mezzrow (my first visit there--great venue), Kris Davis at the Village Vanguard (Johnathan Blake was on fire, and I was seated right next to the drums), and Bill Charlap at Smoke (had a long and fascinating conversation afterwards with Kenny Washington about his writing the notes for the Jamal Mosaic). Jazz Congress also hosted a great tribute to the late Russell Malone in the Appel Room at JALC, with numerous musicians such as Ron Carter, Kenny Barron, Diana Krall, and others playing 1-2 numbers apiece.

Just came back from a series of concerts at concert venue Le Triton near Paris for its 25th anniversary. Lots of music, between 2 pm and midnight, starting at 2 with Magma. Apart from them, in a packed room and upclose, great seeing Simon Goubert/ Sophia Domancich/ John Greaves / Christophe Monniot and also in various formations Louis Sclavis, Henri Texier, Daniel Humair among others... Couldn't stay the whole evening unfortunately.

In a couple of weeks, Mark Eisenman, Mike Murley, Neil Swainson and Terry Clarke take over the Rex for 4 days (Feb 12-15).  I hope to make it twice.

Then in early March there is the Women in Space festival in Toronto: https://www.womenfromspace.com/index.html#section-one .  Lots of interesting stuff but the most interesting by far (to me) is Myra Melford's Fire and Water Trio with Ingrid Laubrock and Lesley Mok.  Working out the details, but it looks like this will be 9:30 or 10 pm on March 9.  I should be able to make it.

Wayne Brasel group feat. Jeff Bourdeaux on drums, Uli Langthaler on bass and Thomas Pustelnik on tenor. 

This trio unit (Wayne, Jeff, Uli) had a steady gig at the defunct "Jazz Spelunke" in Viena some decades ago.

Great Reunion: The sounded just great. And for me most of all because it is not just a guitar trio, having such a great tenor player on stage. 

I enjoyed the music very much. 

Maybe Jeff, as great as he is as a drummer should have done less "hosting". There were too long speeches to the audience between tunes, I mean anecdotes and all. That may be nice if you read it, but on stage I would have preferred only music music music and maybe a short announcement of the band at the beginning and a "thank you" at the end....

Caught RIckie Lee Jones on Friday night, followed by Kat Edmonson on Saturday.

Rickie did well, but you can tell age has slowed her a bit.  

Kat's sort of a jazz/pop singer, originally from Texas but now based in New York.  Her last album had guest appearances by Bill Frisell, Jaleel Shaw, and Avi Bortnick.  Got to chat with her after the show for a bit, talking about our shared background in Austin.

One of the great Oto nights, a performance for the ages. Over two hours, uninterrupted improvisation from a trio of truly superb musicians.

Seeing Tyshawn twice in June at Jazz Gallery (6/11 & 6/14). Band not listed yet. I’d love to see this trio. Two sets each night so no continuous set. I saw his quintet on 3/2/2020 right before the lockdown do a 2 hour plus continuous set.
