Nels Cline, Greg Belisle-Chi, John Hebert & Chad Taylor

fine set but nowhere near the night before. Nels & Hebert were the stars. Greg a good foil but he still needs a way to go. Tough spot playing across from Nels Cline. 
 

He’s only on the scene less than 5 years so hopefully he will continue to progress with Berne. I’ll see him & Hebert on Tuesday with Berne, Aurora Nealand & Tom Rainey.

The Artifacts Trio, at Oto last night. Fabulous concert, two concise sets, swinging as hell. Three great players/composers showcasing their own compositions and some by AACM masters, especially Steve McCall.

Nice chat with Mike Reed at half time too.

They were in Saugerties (NY) yesterday 10/20.

I think Cliff Peterson went. I saw the Lou Grassi (drums) Trio (with Michael Bisio on bass and Cécile Broché on violin) in Kingston instead. The 2 events overlapped (5 PM and 4 PM starting times) so one had to choose.

Yes, Sunday was a busy day. At 2:00 PM, I caught a straight ahead session in Athens presented by Planetarts.org.  Then I motored down the road to Kingston to hear the Grassi Trio. Unfortunately, that concert started 15 minutes late so I heard only 20 minutes or so.  Great stuff.  Then I drove back to Saugerties to see Ban and Maneri in support of their new ECM release, Transylvanian Dance. Ban's and Maneri's explanation of the research into Bartok's field recordings to prepare for the record was absorbing.  The music was engrossing.

Josephine Davies Satori last night at the Parrakeet Kentish Town. In Trio format and then joined by a pianist. Wow, what a tone on the tenor, especially at the lower end. Very interesting original compositions.

I'd have liked to make it to that. I saw Satori first about 3 years ago and was equally impressed, just a trio then. About a year ago I saw them with Alcyona Mick in piano, which was good but I missed the space of the trio music. The Satori trio albums are really good I think.

Davies is also very good in the Full Circle Quartet if you're interested.

I put Satori in my recent BFT here, got some interesting responses.

Extraordinary, just extraordinary. Expectations were high but they were exceeded.

last Thursday second set was John Blum & Chuck Roth duo

38 minute & 20 minute unrelenting improvisations / Blum almost too much. He’s so great it’s often too much. Chuck Roth from another planet.

Agreed, the pianist was v good and the trio sort of sat back and let her play solo sometimes but I preferred the space of the trio.  I will definitely look out for more Josephine Davies and the Full Circle Quartet. Thanks

Never been to this venue before (it's on the pricey side), but given the location and recent events I hope he'll be motivated and fired up.

I saw him just a few months ago and he declined requests to play "Rocket Launcher."  Maybe he'll have a change of heart tomorrow.  I should try to catch him on his next Toronto show.  As fine as he is as a solo artist, I would also like to see him backed by a band.

Nobody requested anything, but in the "greatest hits department" there was a mini-medley of Lovers in a dangerous time and Wondering where the lions are about halfway through.

Environment seemed a bigger theme than politics. Excellent concert, though.

Last Sunday evening, 2 sets with the Melissa Aldana Quintet at the Village Vanguard. I believe I read the claim on the board somewhere that the Village Vanguard has had its seating realigned and Blue Noteified (made crowded and uncomfortable), but this proved to be incorrect. They do have a new awning, but otherwise the seating is the same as it ever was.

Monday evening, a set of the Todd Marcus Quintet with Don Byron at Blues Alley in D.C..  Actually the first time I had ever been there. Very good set featuring bass clarinet/clarinet front line.

Good to hear that Byron's still playing well. He used to have quite a high profile over here but I've not heard about him for a while
