Pete C Posted March 17, 2012 Report Posted March 17, 2012 Intakt is planning a 2012 release of the 1980 Willisau concert by the "Musical Monsters": Don Cherry, John Tchicai, Irene Schweizer, Leon Francioli, Pierre Favre. Of course it's been "in circulation", but this is great news! I can't remember whether it was Wilisau or Nyon that really blew me away. The other was merely very good. What a treat it was to see Schweizer & Favre last weekend. Has Tchicai completely given up alto? The few times I saw him over the past 15 years he played tenor. Right now I'm listening to the wonderful 1968 unreleased Hamburg session by Abdullah Ibrahim with Tchicai, Cherry, Barbieri, Ntshoko and Barre Phillips. Quote
king ubu Posted March 18, 2012 Report Posted March 18, 2012 No, he played alto (and flute) when I heard him and got to hand out with him last year. Wonderful, wonderful sound on alto! Quote
Late Posted April 8, 2013 Author Report Posted April 8, 2013 Abdullah Ibrahim Quintet featuring John Tchicai and Gato Barbieri. (Note the look into the camera at approximately 2:37.) Quote
David Gitin Posted April 8, 2013 Report Posted April 8, 2013 John wanted Charles to play tunes (not all 'free' jazz); that was it as told me by JT. Quote
JohnS Posted April 8, 2013 Report Posted April 8, 2013 (edited) I took this at Cadentia Nova Danica's London gig way back. I've posted it before but maybe it's worth posting again. Edited April 8, 2013 by JohnS Quote
jlhoots Posted April 8, 2013 Report Posted April 8, 2013 The newly released Engines CD with Tchicai is supposed to be excellent.Looking forward to hearing it. Quote
brownie Posted April 8, 2013 Report Posted April 8, 2013 Laton, thanks for the link. Great video! Quote
StarThrower Posted April 8, 2013 Report Posted April 8, 2013 Tchicai made a great record with Charlie Kohlhase called Life Overflowing. I bought a copy from Charlie about a dozen years ago. http://www.allmusic.com/album/life-overflowing-mw0000777800 Quote
Steve Reynolds Posted April 8, 2013 Report Posted April 8, 2013 (edited) The Engines CD is on it's way from Poland as we speak and sorry Jeffcrom - I was able to see him once at The Knitting Factory with Paul Smoker, Adam Lane (I think?) and the great Barry Altschul. I think he played all tenor saxophone and it was 2 very good sets of music. Maybe around 1999 or 2000, I think Edited April 8, 2013 by Steve Reynolds Quote

Pim Posted November 13, 2017 Report Posted November 13, 2017 This is the one for me from Tchicai. What a record, what a band, what a beautiful cover art. Quote
king ubu Posted November 14, 2017 Report Posted November 14, 2017 Maybe not quite THE ONE for me, but agree on all accounts, it's wonderful! Quote
mjazzg Posted November 14, 2017 Report Posted November 14, 2017 It's a great album, just wish it wasn't so short Quote
