At some point, they revised some or all of the sound effects, presumably to make the sound more contemporary.  No idea if they have reversed course on this since.  I remember seeing/hearing side-by-side comparisons of certain scenes.

For the better?  IIRC the film was shot in VistaVision. Not sure about the VistaVision  sound system.

How was Vertigo revised?   And BTW Eva Marie Saint is still alive and 100 years old.  I thought she had died because I came across her name along with her husbands on a gravestone in  a cemetery near where I live.  However it turns out she had had her name engraved beside her husband's when he died.  

If I remember correctly when I was at SB High School around 1970 she appeared in play there. The theater department head had somewhat of a reputation in the industry. In fact, I'm pretty sure that Tim Bottoms stayed on an extra year just to work with him.

My recollection is that the new effects were louder and more jarring.  I didn't like them.
