connoisseur series500 Posted May 29, 2003 Report Posted May 29, 2003 Want to ask everyone first of all, if they can stand any of Donald Byrd's sessions produced by Larry Mizell. Secondly, if you do like some of them, which might be your favorites. I bought STEPPIN INTO TOMORROW recently and it doesn't sound bad at all. In fact, I kinda like it. It's even got a disco tune on there, but it's not that bad. I had KOFI and ETHIOPIAN NIGHTS once but traded them in at a music shop as I didn't like them. Perhaps I should have given them another chance. What do you guys think? Quote
Soul Stream Posted May 29, 2003 Report Posted May 29, 2003 (edited) KOFI is a monster, killer stuff and a fav BYRD..., that said, I haven't heard them all by any means. Mizell is a big turn off for me (KOfi is non-mizell). Edited May 29, 2003 by Soul Stream Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted May 29, 2003 Report Posted May 29, 2003 I really like KOFI, but then that's mostly cuz it isn't a Mizell production. I've sampled a few of those later Byrd dates from the early 70's, but I never can find enough in them to bite the bullet and buy any of them. Maybe there's more in there that I'm missing, but at the rate I'm going - I may never find out!! Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted May 29, 2003 Report Posted May 29, 2003 Count me in the NOT column re Mizell Quote

connoisseur series500 Posted May 29, 2003 Author Report Posted May 29, 2003 Another good session which took place around the Mizell period, but did not involve him is FANCY FREE. It's a good session. BTW, "Steppin into Tomorrow" is the only Mizell produced cd I've got. I probably won't explore any of the others, but I'll keep this one. I find Byrd's trumpet sounds a lot like the popular Herb Albert. I guess overproduction makes all the trumpets sound alike. Quote
jazzbo Posted May 29, 2003 Report Posted May 29, 2003 These Mizelli productions are . . . mood music for me. When the mood is right, they're fine. I have some of them, will probably get the two that I don't have. I have the Bartz, and I've had it for years and years, and I like it. (I like it probably the best of the productions.) Quote
