Harold_Z Posted November 5, 2004 Report Posted November 5, 2004 Bad news. I guess he was one of the last guys left that were playing and contibuting as far back as the 30s. I loved his playing. I was just listening to some of the Lester Young Commodores the other day. Anybody remember seeing him on the Joe Franklin Show sometime in the 80s singing and playing "Oh, Look At Me Now" ? Songwriter Irving Ceasar was on the same show. Lots of laughs all around -It was classic. Quote
DrJ Posted November 5, 2004 Report Posted November 5, 2004 I have all 3 volumes of the Mosaic Complete Commodore LP set on the way after getting lucky with a local auction. I will be doing a lot of listening to Bushkin in many of those recordings. Sad to see an old master go. Quote

Thanks for the reminder--I'm putting them on. Quote
ghost of miles Posted November 5, 2004 Report Posted November 5, 2004 My God, it's actually in the Yahoo "top stories" newsbox: Bushkin Quote
Brownian Motion Posted November 6, 2004 Report Posted November 6, 2004 To demonstrate how wrong even the NYT obit writers can be, examine this paragraph: "At 14 he nearly played on a Goodman recording date, substituting for Teddy Wilson. Wilson finally showed up before the tapes rolled, but Mr. Bushkin's career was in motion: he started working for dance bands and society bands, performing in New York, New Jersey and Florida." Twin anachronisms! Way to go! http://www.nytimes.com/2004/11/05/arts/music/05bushkin.html Quote

At least they didn't put 2 r's in Berigan! R.I.P. Mr. Bushkin. Edited November 10, 2004 by BERIGAN Quote
brownie Posted November 11, 2004 Report Posted November 11, 2004 Was at Iridium on Sunday to listen to Bob Dorough. He announced the passing away of Joe Bushkin. And played a superb version of 'Oh Look At Me Now!' Quote
