Brad Posted November 26, 2004 Report Posted November 26, 2004 Brownie stole some of my thunder but I picked up Nicky's Tune recently and this is an outstanding album. Anything with Jodie Christian has to be good. Quote
Bright Moments Posted November 26, 2004 Report Posted November 26, 2004 i dig idrees on that prestige all stars cd! B-) Quote
sheldonm Posted November 26, 2004 Report Posted November 26, 2004 I've seen Ira several times over the past couple years playing in Chicago. Trumpet, tenor, flute....you name it, he plays it.....and well!!! Very friendly guy and always eager to help the younger musicians! Quote
Michael Weiss Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 I played two concerts with Idrees Sulieman in June of 1990 - Mannes College and Temple University - in a group with Ralph Moore, Peter and Kenny Washington, playing Idrees' tunes. He was a very nice, soft spoken guy and played with a big fat sound. One of the ORIGINAL bebop trumpet players, he had his own thing alongside Dizzy and Fat Girl. Probably one of the most lyrical trumpet players of all time. I met him for the first time at Sadik Hakim's apartment around 1980. He had a tape of Oscar Dennard playing solo piano at a house party: Boplicity and Round Midnight. Unbelievable. Beautiful smooth block chords. I regret not getting a copy of that. I think Jamil Nasser has it. I don't think there are any commercial recordings that really show what Oscar Dennard could do. I'm glad to see Idrees' name mentioned here. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 Welcome Michael. Glad you found your way here. Quote
cho Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 Speaking of Indress, I have just bought second hand the CD "Roots" (Riverside CD), an early 60s recordings (no leader) which featured Indress. Very nice. Quote
Clunky Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 I don't think there are any commercial recordings that really show what Oscar Dennard could do. He gets some decent space on the Lionel Hampton sessions with Lucky Thompson on board Quote
Tom 1960 Posted September 28, 2009 Report Posted September 28, 2009 Any thoughts on this Ira Sullivan/Delmark release? I had the opportunity to sample the tracks over at Amazon and it sounds quite good. Also the fact Johnny Griffin is on the session is of special interest to me. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted September 28, 2009 Report Posted September 28, 2009 Both of the Delmarks are worthy - even the one with Nicky Hill in place of Griff. Quote
AllenLowe Posted September 28, 2009 Report Posted September 28, 2009 Ira Sullivan is one of the greatest trumpeters I ever saw, and if justice meant anything the racialists at Lincoln Center would have had his lip bronzed by now. I only saw him in person once, but I was completely bowled over. Unforgettable (as a matter of fact it was at The Showcase). He's a great saxophonist but his trumpet playing was the deepest brass playing I have ever heard. Quote
Larry Kart Posted September 28, 2009 Report Posted September 28, 2009 I love this one: http://www.vee-jay.net/jazz/birdlives/birdlives-v1.htm for everyone on it: Ira, Nicky Hill (almost certainly his best record), Jodie Christian, Donald Garrett, and drummers Wilbur Campbell and Dorel Anderson. I was there that night at the Birdhouse. Another gem that's easy to overlook is is the 1957 Red Rodney album that orginally was on Signal as "The Red Arrow." Some of Ira's best tenor playing. And the bass-drum teams! Oscar Pettiford throughout, coupled with Elvin Jones on one side and Philly Joe on the other. Quote
Larry Kart Posted September 28, 2009 Report Posted September 28, 2009 Actually, that Signal album was titled "Red Rodney 1957" -- reissued on another label it became "The Red Arrow." That album, coupled with other worthwhile Rodney from the period, is available now in this form: http://www.amazon.com/Rodney-Quintets-1955...6471&sr=1-2 Quote
JSngry Posted September 28, 2009 Report Posted September 28, 2009 45 bucks for a Fresh Sound pirate job? Quote
Larry Kart Posted September 28, 2009 Report Posted September 28, 2009 45 bucks for a Fresh Sound pirate job? Far be it from me to endorse Fresh Sound pirate jobs, but in the name of accuracy, it's three LPs of material on two CDs, and it can be had for $29.89 "from these sellers" (as they say): http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00...p;condition=new Quote
JohnS Posted September 28, 2009 Report Posted September 28, 2009 I've been playing the couple of tracks by Blakey with Sullivan a lot lately. Nice trumpet and tenor. Especially nice trumpet chase with Byrd. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted September 28, 2009 Report Posted September 28, 2009 A couple of good CDs with Idrees Sulieman. Idrees Sulieman Quartet - Now Is The Time - Steeplechase 31052 with Cedar Walton, Sam Jones, Billy Higgins Red Mitchell Quintet - Chocolate Cadillac - Steeplechase 31161 with the very good Swedish tenor player Nisse Sandstrom, Horace Parlan, Rune Carlsson(dr) Quote

JohnT Posted March 31, 2011 Report Posted March 31, 2011 Saw Ira Sullivan at a concert here in Tampa about a month ago. He was in great form and it was a fantastic concert. Glad he's down here in Florida and I get to see him play rather frequently. Quote
Victor Christensen Posted March 31, 2011 Report Posted March 31, 2011 I saw and heard Idrees Suliman 3 or 4 times when he was in The Danish Radio Big Band at the time when its musical director was Thad Jones, it's was a great band. Vic Quote
